Description
Tyrannosaurus rex. An acrylic painting I did of a stalking Tyrannosaurus, eyeing its prey.
I have a strange interest in spooky forests and the terrors they might hold. I wanted to invoke the image of a stalking cat with this pose, as the tyrannosaur inches forward within its wooded domain.
Completed in early January 2017.
Done using color pencils and acrylics.
I think Tyrannosaurus would've been primarily a forest hunter.
A fully-grown T. rex weighed 9 tonnes and could only run at 16 lm/h; in fact, it would crush its own skull if it tripped while running.
So instead of running down its prey, a T. rex would lie in wait beside a game trail, until a prey animal wandered close enough to strike.
Forests are full of dark shadows and dense undergrowth, providing plenty of cover for an ambushing T. rex.
T. rex may also have been a nocturnal hunter, equipped with excellent night vision. Many modern predators like Tigers and Wolves also hunt when it's dark. T. rex would've found it vital to use the dark of night to conceal itself until it entered striking distance.
So, a T. rex attack would've looked a lot less like a loud high-speed chase as seen in Jurassic Park, and more like being stalked by Slenderman.
