The Amulet and the Greatsword, Part 5

Lydia didn't make it to the Dragonborn's wedding, but others did. Aerin sat on Mjoll's side of the temple and smiled sweetly throughout the ceremony. On Almarie's side were the Valerians, a sister and brother who ran a store in Riverwood. A bard named Sven and an archer named Faendal were in attendance, too, but Almarie wasn't sure if they were there for her, or if they were Carmilla Valerian's dates. After the ceremony, Mjoll approached her new wife to talk about where they'd live. "You could live with me," Mjoll suggested. Almarie was so charmed by the warm, cheerful, open way Mjoll had put forth the offer that she replied "Living with you

Almarie had slain the Dwemer Centurion and retrieved Mjoll's enchanted glass greatsword, Grimsever. She and Lydia, her faithful housecarl, were approaching the gates of Riften. "Here goes nothing," she said as she double-checked her inventory for the Amulet of Mara. "Lydia," she began, "you have proved yourself worthy and honorable on the battlefield time and time again. I only had to cast the Load Last Save spell twice in that dungeon." "What last what?" said Lydia. "What I'm trying to say is, Lady Mjoll was once an adventuress like me, and I have a feeling that when she gets her sword back, she'll want to return to that life." "I think

"Well," said Almarie, "that was a huge freaking' waste of my time." Lydia had finally managed to drag the Dragonborn to Riften. They'd gone straight to the Bee and Barb, the tavern where Iona said Aerin and Mjoll were likely to be at this time of day. First, Almarie was waylaid by a stablehand outside the tavern door. Of course she had to ask the fretful man what was wrong, which led to a promise to settle the man's debt with a member of the Thieves' Guild. This led to a confrontation with the Thieves' Guild inside the tavern. No sooner did Almarie turn her back on Brynjolf and Sapphire than a man asked her to see about a horse. Almarie was

"It's been awhile since we were in Riften," Lydia commented one day with seeming randomness. "We don't have any good reason to go there," said Almarie. "I'm not interested in joining the Thieves' Guild. Too much hassle for too little profit." "Apparently Riften has a protector now," said Lydia. "An adventurer, like you, who decided to stay in one place and help out one town." "Why would they do that?" said Almarie. "And of all places, why Riften?" "My cousin Iona thinks it's to torment her personally," said Lydia. "There's this guy across the street that she's been in love with forever, and one day he brought home a half-dead blonde, and

Almarie had come a long way since she first traveled from Riverwood to Whiterun. She'd joined the Companions and been initiated as a werewolf. She'd killed a dragon by shooting frost from her hands and absorbed its soul, discovering she was the Dragonborn. She's journeyed to the College at Winterhold to develop her newfound spellcasting talent and somehow become Arch-Mage. She'd finally answered the Greybeards' call and gone to High Hrothgar to learn the Way of the Voice. She'd earned her way into the Bard's College in Solitude by helping them protect a cherished tradition. She'd helped a couple of retired Imperials begin rebuilding Helgen, t
