A great quote from my long time online pal (it's been seven years now) WorldsandCenturies. Creationists believe that they are very super special, that they don't share any lineage with the animal kingdom, but are separate, made directly by a god in his own image, and that the entire 70 sextillion star (known) universe, along with everything within it and without was made just for them, and designed with them in mind, and that if they can just manage to convince themselves of this, they'll all be rewarded with cosmic participation awards in the great safe space in the sky. They are the original snowflakes.

Only an evolutionist, the original one no less, would down talk Christians. Look around at the plants, animals, and environments, Doesn't being created by a Living God make more sense than "we're just an accident because of a big explosion" I hope it does to you.

He's not down-talking Christians; he's down-talking creationists. To be fair, all creationists believe in a God, but (hate to break it to you) not all of those who believe in a God are creationists. They generally believe in evolution as a process that was started by God.

The evolution theory is popular because it's been extensively studied by men and women of science; science being an intellectual pursuit of knowledge about the world and the universe based on logic and reason.

Maybe in ten, twenty or even a hundred years, it'll have turned out that the evolution theory was wrong. That's the beauty of science; it continually updates as new evidence comes out. But for now, with the empirical evidence that we as a society have uncovered at this moment, the evolution theory is the best conclusion science has come to.

If you want to believe in creationism, that's well within your right to do so.. but all the same, science, logic, reason and evidence really don't give a fuck about whether the facts contradict someone's religious beliefs.

I don't think God used evolution then.

Doesn't making stuff up make more sense than science, reason, and evidence? No, no it doesn't. And this quote isn't from Darwin, if you cared to read it, I was quoting a friend.

Well that's even worse. If you and your friend choose to be blind to pure reason then so be it. We'll see who's right in the end.

Save the veiled threats. We don't need to wait. We already know. Denying science isn't "reason," it's the exact opposite.

Hmmmm, makes sense. Damn, I never managed to see this contradiction O_o

"I don't understand why I considered arrogant for thinking that I'm temporary; insignificant; I'm a blink in the cosmic eye and that it has existed long before me and won't remember me very long. I'm arrogant for that, but the Christian who claims that he is the reason the universe exists is humble in his ideology." ~Aron Ra

Incredible we're discussing this sort of primitive stuff in Century 21 as a live issue in the US.

It's sad. I've personally has a small resurgence of debates with creationists recently. They number in the tens of millions in the US alone.

One would have hoped the Scopes trial would have see all this off nearly 91 years ago - okay Scopes was found guilty, but the Tennessee law had indeed been broken.

Are many "conservatives" creationists in the US?

I find it baffling - the nonsense sane, even intelligent people will believe/swallow/subscribe to, because of their "faith" in something. This applies to beliefs in political ideologies as well as "religion". A large capacity for gullibility, delusion, wishful/magical thinking seem eternal characteristics which are deeply ingrained in humanity.Roll Eyes

That being said, I believe people should be free to believe what they want - as long as they don't force others to share those beliefs, and try to censor those who criticize their own shibboleths. Something the state is getting perilously close to doing in my country.

Creationists are overwhelmingly conservative or center-right.

Agreed. Progress has been made, and there's been a number of legal victories for church/state separation in the public school system, where many creationists would have creationism taught as science in biology class. Much work still to be done.
