Watch Parts Beetle No 4 (II)

buy: www.amechanicalmind.com/produc…

Description Created 4.1.2019

This beetle was completely from recycled watch parts and fastened together with lead-free, silver bearing solder.

The head is made from a couple cut, sanded and shaped black watch dials (faces) with brass watch pins for eyes and a cut and bent gear for pincers. Her exoskeleton is an antique watch dial that has been domed and cut with a jeweler's saw into wing shapes. Her abdomen features many different watch plates, gears, bears assemblies, and balance wheels, while her wings are a cut and sanded watch dial. Her legs are made from many different cut watch winding stems.

There is no glue or resin to be found in the piece...everything is soldered into place with metal. This is a one of a kind work of art, never to be exactly reproduced. Her dimension are 50mm wide, 32mm front to back, 24mm tall.

She is extremely fragile and should be handled sparingly and very gently, and is most definitely not a toy.

Watch Parts (and light bulb) Spider No 103 (II)

buy:  www.amechanicalmind.com/produc…

Watch Parts Spider No 103
created April 27, 2019

Spider No 103 was made with recycled watch parts and a red automotive bulb.

In order to create the legs, twenty-four watch winding stems are cut in different sizes to simulate the organic appearance of real spiders’ legs, which vary in size and shape between species. Each of these segments is carefully arranged into a leg and soldered at the joints with lead free, silver bearing solder.

To make the body of the spider, six spring bars have been cut and soldered together. An automotive bulb is very carefully removed from its metal base and soldered to the body chassis by its lead wires.

After the body is made, the leg assemblies are carefully arranged and attached by soldering. The legs and body are then manipulated in order to make the spider stand properly. All joints are then resoldered for added stiffness.

Spider No 103 measures 44mm wide by 44mm front to back by 18mm tall.

All creations made by A Mechanical Mind are one of a kind, never to be reproduced exactly. All parts are soldered, never glued. Each sculpture comes with a 3” wide by 4” tall glass display dome with wooden base. Sculptures are not toys and should be handled sparingly, as their parts are tiny and delicate.

Chicago, IL I am Justin Gershenson-Gates, the thinker and assembler behind A Mechanical Mind. The grandson of a railroad man, the son of a gearhead, my life has been filled with all things mechanical. As a child, I would take my toys apart in order to see how they worked, but was never able to put them back together again. Now, I take dead old watches from the top drawers of the world, and rearrange their bits and widgets into whimsical designs.

My aim is to show the beauty of the mechanical world, a place generally hidden from the public behind metal and glass. My pieces display the more delicate and ephemeral side of gears, rather than the cold, hard factory feel they normally portray. Please contact me at jmg@amechanicalmind.com or jmg.amechanicalmind@gmail.com with any questions you may have.

I honestly admire your work like no other, and applaud your creativity. It really is fantastic. So glad to have found your page.

EDIT: Additionally, if you ever were to sell a piece on Etsy akin to your arachnid/insect sculptures, but in the form of a pendant, I'd be greatly interested in purchasing.

Wowie your little watch-creatures there are astonishingly adorable and fascinating at the same time! I've always loved such handcrafted beings and yours in specific could really appear in a steampunk based movie or story! Every little creature being unique in their own structure it's really really fun to look and explore the fine work you've done on each of them!

Keep up you wonderful work there, darling!
