Smoking is GOOD for you, mate by AmbassadorMann Smoking is GOOD for you, mate by AmbassadorMann
All of my craftwork is based on the concept (fan fictional concept) of the world Prestel, of "Last Exile" anime series. The concept includes military and civil clothing and accesories of many social groups and military organisations, mentioned and not mentioned in anime series.

Some (fan fictional) history facts:

Anatoray Voluntary City Militia (Aνατοραι Εθελοντικε Πoλη στρατοu) – military organization formed by government in a postwar period , mostly from demobilized low-rank soldiers. The actual purpose of this unit was to fight with organized crime, civil unrest, riots, smugglers and sky pirates. At the over hand the social purpose of this unit’s creation, was to give an employment to vast numbers of demobilized aerial musketeers, who didn’t know any other work, except serving as a deck sharpshooter, and in many occasions didn’t have a home to return to. If not employed and properly controlled, These people could become a considerable problem for a society of Anatoray. Actually, a vast number of former soldeirs, who decidef not to join Voluntary Militia or to start a settled life, did join the ranks of fast growing numbers of pirate bands and smuggler artels.

By the decree of the Imperial Court, each city council was forced to host a number of militia regiments (depending on the city size), and to supply them with place of residence, three meals a day and a rather low wage. However, in fact many different types of equipment and facilities were usually donated by the host city to it's militia - mechanic shops, old courier and heavycargo vanships, even refueling aerial platforms - all this was abandoned, "nationalized" or simply confiscated by city council during the war period.
There were three conditions necessary for joining the militia - more than one year of army service, posseion of a firearm and possesion of a melee weapon. Officialy, each and every volunteer obeyed only to the quartermaster-in-comand - administrative employee in the cervice of the city, attached to every regiment and reporting directly to the city council. However, a some kind of subordination was developed inside the militia, usually based on the age, experience and personal achievements of the volunteer during his service in army and militia.
At the beginning, uniform of volunteers consisted only from an armband with sign of Anatoray and abbreviation “A.V.C.M’’ . Although, very soon, volunteers created their own uniform codex, or, in a greater degree, a kind of fashion, varying from a homecity and volunteer’s occupation in his unit.
During the first post-war years, Voluntary Militia was the crutch that supported local power in it's struggle to sustain order in society. Low cost, self sufficient, expirienced army of men, that, basically had almost nothing to loose.

I'm a heavy smoker myself, and thise concept came to my mind as a nececcity - the fist mask of this particular design was made to serve as a respirator/face protection from metal shrapnel while working with some cheap powertools. And then you desperatly need a smoke while working, and you just can't remove that mask from your face... WHAT SHALL YOU DO, DAMMIT! Enter the "smoking vent mask". And if you ask me, this stuff is one of my personal "epic wins". :)

Awesome costume details. I'm a fan of Last Exile too; Lavie Head is one of my favourite characters of all time. :]

Yep, Last Exile is my...everything, in some way. However i'm not a big fan of the plot of the series,if you know that I mean. For me, the world that surrounds main charectars, those little details that can be seen only for a couple of seconds, the background story of this colonial planets, the aftermath of the series... You know, I have a feeling that Range Murata had a much more full and sufisticated vision of Prestel, but it wasn't included into anime...
You see, I'm intrested mostly in creating designs that contribute to a lower classes and low-rank military. Plus most of my ideas based on the "fun fiction" way of seeing the world of Last Exile. Mostly the first ten years after the end of the series plot. Plus, you will never see uniforms of Silverna crew or some other major charecters. But recreating a uniform of Anatoray aerial musketeers or Disith deck officer... or evev someone that is even less significant, or even never appeared in the actual anime, but was concealed somethere beyond the scene. A siple folk. A simple folk of the totaly different world. You see - basicaly this is the catch - all the mighty and powerful are somewhat alike in all of the imaginary worlds there, but the simple folk show us the real difference. That is why I also tend to focus on small details - it is also a good way to show the difference.

Very nice, you have a good insight. I agree that Range Murata's vision would have been much more expansive in his mind -- but anime rarely (if ever) captures those subtle details, and development of the more background characters.

Strange mail you've put together with two different ring IDs, but it makes for a very cool effect; good job mate!

By the way is the actual "official" language of "Last Exile" greek or was that your idea?? Just curious, greek here!

Well, yes, greek is an "official" language of "Last Exile". Basically most of the greek phrases and wrighting you see in the seris is an english and japan words written in greek alphabeth, however it is simply due too the fact that Range Murata and other designers involved in making the series simply doen'k know greek. However Range Murata stated that in his mind greek is the actual colonial languge of the world of Prestel. And there is also some sentences on actual greek written for example on Anatoray sky ironclads, and some other places. In my opinion, this fictional "colonial greek" is much or less simplified languge, that is somewhat different from modern greek, since colonial planets of Prestel lost it's connection with Earth around 500 years before the events shown in anime series...So there is a lot of "domestic" words, influnce of other languages like latin, english or chinies...new terminology, slang and other stuff like that. An articulation may also be drasticly changed.
But don't get me wrong - I'm not thinking of inventing of new fan-fiction language just fro the need of my concept. After all, I'm just a mere craftsman and designer, not a genious like J.R.R. Tolkien :) I simply try to pay attention to the details, while crating new concepts, especially then I have to base them on something that already exists.

Yeah, I've noticed that you pay great attention to details! IMO it's very important to do so, wether in crafting or background storys.
Good idea of the designers to use the greek alphabet, I guess it makes an impact, not being usual like the latin. Like that Tuareg alphabet, man is that alien!

Anyway your work is awesome, especially your leatherwork, excellent stitching

This is brilliant! I love the hat especially, mainly because it's so very different from anything I've seen before. I love the details on everything you make & pairing a steampunk outfit with chainmail is just wonderful!

Such an awesome design! If I weren't quitting, I would be investing in one! I may still, because when I wear something like that, I'd be at a convention where I'm gonna be smoking cloves. :D Nicely done, +faves.

Thanx man! This concept was born as a necessity! In late september I was wearing mask like this, but without smoking vent, during LARP, while playing militia commisar-in-command. And then I realised that I wasn't able to smoke my cigars without wearing off the mask, I said to myself: "damn it, it's soooo uncomfortable!". And voala! You see the result.

Awesome. Would you be willing to make something like it in black leather with silver hardware? (Stainless steel or something, not actual SILVER, lol)If so, about how much would you charge, my good man?

Have no problems with performing this mask in black leather with nickel/stainless steel harware. However, it may take some time, since I have a lot of comissions on goggles lately... But anyway. As for the price - it wouldn't be affected much - the same 145usd, that I charge for the brown leather mask at Etsy ([link]), plus another 10usd, since I wouldn't buy metal parts in bulk, hence it'll cost me more, plus 10usd for shipping to US.
It could be ready in late januar, and the shipping time is usually between 2 to 3 weeks.
If you're intrested - let me know.

Heh, I wish they could...Guess it will take a different world to see some real victorian elegance in everyday life of a post-modern society. Anyway, thanx! As for the "Last Exile" - this is one of the best steampunk/dieselpunk anime series ever created. However i'm working more in the concept of a funart "after-story", so you wouldn't find there much voluntary militia there, although you will find there raws of aerial musketeers shoting each over from aboard of sky ironclads and over totally crazy stuff. It's not one of "your regular steampunk anime". All the art was made by Range Murata, who's not only artist but also a fashion and intérieur designer.

wow man so from a fashion and interior designer to the anime designer? HOLY SHIT!!!!ill sure check him out he sounds as interesting as you are :P hehehe and yesh i know back in those days if they had a bit of steam punk futurism the world would be such a beter place you just feel like saving up millions and billions of money and buying a city and making it all steam punk and let steam punks live there and keep the culture growing like a disease it would be so awesome to have it real>
