The brakes on the fourth coach of the train seem to be running a little hot as the train came to a stop in the Lehigh Gorge while we waited for an oncoming passenger train to take the siding. The oncoming passenger train, the 70 minute Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway excursion out of Jim Thorpe, PA, was itself delayed by a Norfolk Southern freight train on the adjacent track. Per operating rules on the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern passenger trains are forbidden from operating in the Lehigh Gorge while the adjacent track has a moving freight train on it. The reason for this is due to space restrictions in the gorge, the parallel tracks are extremely close together and any loose or shifted cargo on the freight can strike the occupied passenger cars. So for safety reasons passenger train movements are suspended while NS operates freight on their line.
