Lehigh Railway GP40-2 #3002 is passing through center city Wilkes-Barre, PA on Luzerne & Susquehanna trackage. The crew had just finished spotting the passenger half of a six hours late Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey (RBBX) red unit circus train and was making their way to the interchange with the Norfolk Southern on the north end of town to receive the equipment half. This would be the last time the RBBX red unit train would come to northeastern PA as by May 7th, 2017, after the final show in Providence RI, the train will have been sold and the circus shut down. (RBBX blue unit train will last two more weeks with the last show scheduled for May 21st, 2017 in Uniondale, NY.)

Two interesting coincidences happened this day. First, had the train not been six hours late, I would have been at work when it arrived and been unable to photograph it. Second, moments after I had taken this picture, The diesel came to a complete stop next to me, the engineer stood from his control stand on the opposite side of the locomotive, walked to the fireman's side of the cab, leaned out the open window, and greeted me by name. (Bucket list item successfully checked off.) Turns out I has spoken with him several days earlier at my job. He happens to be one of the owners of this and several other short lines in the area. He had actually invited me down to one of his other railroads, the Allentown & Auburn, during that previous conversation.

Small world, isn't it?
