It is time to Judge The Awareness of the Arts: Hidden Light Contest!

Rainbow 8D by MyrthJ
You have until July 27th to read the entries and get your vote in!

When judging a multi-contestant contest where two are competing as one, there are things that one must consider:

How well executed is the art?
How well written is the literature?
But most important:
How well do these two deviations work together to tell a single story?
Did they stick to the theme: Hidden Light?

When looking through our entries that is what the judges will be looking for, and I hope that is what you will be looking for as well. Try not to look at the deviants that submitted the work and pick your favorite people. Try to look at the wonderful work accomplished by these wonderful people!

More Questions? Look in the section under this journal for common questions.

*Please note: Not all of our contestants speak English as their native language, so please judge less on grammar and more on content of their work.

*IMPORTANT CONTESTANTS PLEASE READ THIS AND COMPLY*

Now, this must be said: I would love the contestants to share this journal so that we get more voters, but in the spirit of fairness, please do not outright ask your watchers and friends to vote for your work. (Just ask that they vote on their favorites.) I will see when this journal is tagged and well if you do you will be disqualified for well... un-artsmanship like conduct... conduct unbecoming of a deviant... hmmm something like that. (Oh, and feel welcome to vote for your favorites as well, Please do not vote for your own work.)

I am asking for each voter to select their favorite pairs in the following format:
1st:
2nd:
3rd:
HM:
Please only write the number assigned to the pair beside the places.

If you decide that you rather not read through all of the literature entries, please add "art only" to your voting comment.

We will be judging off of adhearance to the theme and how well the two works tell each others stories! Each work will be judged seporatly first then brought together to judge on how well they work together as one, then a single pair will be chosen for each place.
*Judges* feel free to rank all 22 pairs*
When you are finished send me a note with your choices.

Now on to the entries :la:

There Once Was A Village

There once was a village by UnendingDreamer There Once Was A VillageThere once was a village that dwelled deep in the jungle. It was a small, peaceful village, using the forests’ resources only for their survival. Every person, young and old, had a role within the village. The women were responsible for making pots and clothes and providing the village with fresh fruits and herbs. The men were tasked with hunting and protecting their home. All parts of slain animals were used and nothing went to waste. Everything used to build the village came straight out of the forest. Bamboo poles were used to strengthen the roofs and walls of the mud huts, and animal skins were used for clothes and the bones were used for tools. Life was simple and it was good.
On a particularly uneventful morning, everyone was deeply engrossed in their daily tasks when a roar mightier than all the leopards shattered the peace. Seconds later, a great beast burst from the forest, taller than the highest tree, and pounded its way into the village center. Huts disintegrated in i

Hidden Light

Based on a Beautiful Necklace Created by craftsbyblue
The bell of the old antique shop tinkled as a young woman entered the shop. The shop owner, a short woman wearing wireframed glasses perched halfway down her nose glanced towards the door and smiled at the potential customer, as she gently tugged on a pencil stuck between her ear and strands of white hair that had come loose from a messy bun atop her head.
The shop owner being of a wizened old age had the ability to size up a customer at a glance. Her glance lingered as the young woman made her way into the shop. “Here is a woman,” she thought, “who is searching for something but not sure exactly what.”
The heavy, wooden door slowly shut with a squeak of rusty hinges. The young woman entered wearing a soft white coat over a cinched-waisted dress patterned with delicate flowers in various shades of blue. She slipped her hand acro

What You Saw in Me

There is a light inside me,
I promise that it's true –
Although no one can see it,
Except for super-human you.
Its dying deep inside me,
A reality so dear –
This little light inside me,
Shines brightest when you're near.
I have this light inside me,
It's hidden very deep,
Beneath this cursed darkness
That labels me as 'freak'.
Most people do not see it,
This light the darkness steals,
But I promise you, it's really there,
It's really, really real.
My light never shone out brightly,
It always had to hide,
For people look with judgement
At what's upon my outer side.
And if they hate the outer,
Which is a reality so real,
They cannot like the inner
And the things this stone-heart feels.
My light, it flickered slowly,
Its light was dying, dim.
There was no one to fan the flames,
No one to drown the din
Of millions of judgemental voices,
Raised in cursed, crashing shouts.
Then as if by magic you appeared,
And drowned those voices out.
Yo

Eye of the Storm

Eye of the storm by SinistrosePhosphate Eye of the StormGold and light entwine
Around the earth rotation urge.
Monoliths ram each other
Through the eternal waves.
Pillars of light prop up
On the dormant cloud cover.
Time stands still, the amazement wants,
That no clock is ticking.
I do not see any light
Under the dome of this sky,
While I acquire the letters
Of the storm.
Late, late, very late
I change myself in the root:
Cyclops - Eye for Life -
Wandering, I find my universe.
Amid the destructive power of this
Metaphorical “storm”
There is a peace center:
The Eye of the Storm.
In the period of chaotic sources,
Of destructive forces,
I find the "resting point" in my inner center.
My "self", the hope in the dark.
In the light I learn to love.
Writing poetry I learn in the beauty.
Light and love is the whole,
Because the whole is light and love.

I will teach you great things by LooneyDreamer I will teach you great things“Who will be the Godparents?” Mary asked, curious.
Linda shrugged, leaning back on her chair.
“To be honest, neither Max nor I have any idea of whom to choose as Godfather. For Godmother, we have my best friend Carol, but for Godfather…” She snorted. "We don’t have any good candidate. Maybe we won’t choose anyone.”
“He can’t not have a Godfather!” Mary exclaimed, trying not to shout on the office. “He needs a Godfather, he’s the one who gives you presents and looks after you if your father is not there.”
“Well, I don’t know,” Linda snorted again. “We don’t know anyone who’s suitable for the place. Max has no friends to whom he would want to trust the child.”
“But he needs a Godfather.”
“I know, you just told me! But no one is suitable. Okay, we’ll name Loki as Erik’s Godfather. He can’t be worse than Max’s friends.

Hidden Light

Hidden Light by ChaosFay Hidden LightLight peeks out from over branches,
dappling the skies a myriad of
greens, and blues, and whites.
Laughter floats on the breeze,
swept up like scattered seeds to
find rich ground elsewhere.
Bittersweet memories assail the senses.
shadows of time creep into the field of vision
obscured by unshed tears, lips curved
in wide smiles too irresistible to refuse.
Old traditions were taught here,
even as memories were instilled
deeply in hearts not ready for the future’s heartache.

Winter gripped hard after
Autumn’s colors faded.
Sorrow dripped snow on
flower beds once tenderly nourished.
Sunlight weakly shines through bare branches,
causing bleak shadows to dance
where leaves once held sway.
Desperation creeps close to mourners
as tears tumble down cheeks once
rosy with summer heat and laughter.

Spring bursts forth with a riot of colors.

All Immortal Things Must Die

All Immortal Things Must Die (And Survive) by cosmonstars All Immortal Things Must Die (And Survive)      ‘Almost there,’ Amiya whispered. The pendant around her neck grew brighter with every step. As Keshua set camp that night, the battered land having given way to endless sand, she held onto it, and prayed.
‘We’re almost there!’ she laughed, even as the rivers swelled with rain and the ocean waves crashed against the Aelmount shore. In the night, when the skies were dark, and the pendant grew too bright, she covered it with her hands, held her breath, and prayed.
‘There,’ she breathed, tired to the bone and bleeding, having thrown herself against the stone again, and again, until the ancient walls finally gave way against the onslaught of spells.
Keshua held her back at the now open mouth of the cave. ‘Wait,’ he said, as the light which had guided them through the cities and storms, and the underground maze designed by Zaranie himself, went out

I am going to
My special place
To find the words
Like when voices
In my head help
Makes me feel again
You always find
A way to keep me
Right here waiting
Searching for feelings
As the light fades away
I'll be right here playing
Am afraid since
The day that you
Left in the end
Its pulling me again
Am falling Down
six feet to the ground
The pain is spinning
In my wounded head
For words left unsaid
Memories are
Like riddles that
Make you sad
Am afraid since
the day that
you left in the end
Another sleepless night
with only a ray of hope
Has become my only friend

Do we go to the right
Where nothing is left

Where nothing is right
The war has ended
And here we are
We dug a hole so deep
We can’t reach its bottom anymore
And from the deep dark below
A voice faintly calls our name
And from the deep dark below
A voice faintly calls our name
“You told us we are your future
Yet you let us fall so far behind
You took our hand
Promised you’ll never let go
You called us your hidden light
We are the generation of the future”
The war has ended
And we realise
What we have lost on the way
Nothing is left but a single door
And we take this step
We open this door
What we find behind
Is neither a way to the left
Nor a way to the right
What lies before us
Is our hidden light

[CE] Shadow Dawn by Frappe7 Shadow DawnFor the first time in decades, the streets of the underground city bustled with uncharacteristic vigor. Trapped deep in the bowels of the earth where the deadly rays of the scorching sun could not touch them, the inhabitants gathered around in large crowds to witness the countdown to the phenomenal event that only happened once every moon cycle.
The buzz of excitement was felt all around by rich and poor alike. All except one dusty blonde young man who gulped hard as he gathered his courage to approach the green-eyed woman in front.
“Hey.” A weak greeting given, he smiled awkwardly.
As her sharp gaze turned to meet his, she scoffed in disgust. “Well, if it isn’t the jerk who was flirting with Alexi yesterday.”
Her hands folded across her chest as she declared with a sense of finality. “Look, I don’t want to be a part of your love games anymore, Lucien.”
His expression fell. He had not expected such an extreme reaction from her despite war

Toybox`s New Life [Contest Entry + Collab] by Funny-arts Toybox's New LifeWhile going through the toy box,
A spark ignited in me:
Joyous days now gone,
Memories of a city once visited
But now in ruins.

A talking pony for a mayor
along with his varied cabinet,
Dolls and action figures
Having milkshakes at candy cafes,
Stuffed animals hopping down the street,
bouncing towards the jobs that exist in the mind of a child.

City hall was made of candy in my childhood,
A headquarters of imaginary and silly crossovers.
Streets were filled with sentient cars
And sidewalks had beings of unusual shapes and sizes
And so much more and so much forgotten
And so much left to dust.

It was a long forgotten, shining city
That can never be walked again by my feet.
Time and age has moved too far
And I moved along with it.

So much has changed from my youthful days.
I chose to pass it on to my child
In spite of my inhibiting nostalgia.

The derelict city morphs -
Colors reignite and building reshape.
Citizens come back to life

Contest Entry: Ashley by Metanaito-kyou Contest Entry: AshleyCome one, come all,
And listen to this tale
Get comfortable, relax, and sit tight.
Yes, come and listen
Of how Madame Ashley
Came to share her inner light.
She’s a woman of wealth –
A rich lady with fame,
But longed for more out of life.
She lived long and well,
But something was missing.
And answers were nowhere in sight.
She inherited her wealth,
But still put it to good use.
She was still called generous and polite.
But no matter what she gifted,
Bought, sold, or funded
Her troubles still ceased to subside.
One day on a train
Returning to her stately home,
From a business trip at Silver Heights
Behind her, sat a child,
Both curious and kind,
Who would, inadvertently, change her life.
Madame Ashley was tired,
That day from her work
Life was always busy in the limelight.
But, what bothered her the most
Was though she did well,
Her heart still did not feel quite right.
Her face was weary,
And, to the curious child,
She must have been quite the sight
For then the child said,

The Ancestors Among the Lights by ParadoxSketchbook The Ancestors Among the Lights
The snow crunched beneath his paws and the wind whipped chipped icicles into his face. Above him stood the lights of the north to guide his path. The beast's stubby wings fluttered in the wind he left behind and refused to hold him back from his quest. The white being was determined to question his ancestors. With only the northern lights as his guide to where they could be found.
The snow around him twinkled and radiated a reflection of the sky above him. The icelands were calm and quiet without a single predator on the prowl. It was only he and the lights that guided his way to the ancestral pools. Others of his age had already reached their full potential...so, why hadn't he? His stubby little wings hadn't grown out of cubhood quite yet.
The bear stopped for a moment and checked his map within the sky. He still had a ways to go, but was getting closer to where the lights lead him. On the horizon stood the highest peak in these icelands: the Ancest

You Are Your Own Light by TokyoMoonlight You Are Your Own LightShine, glare, unapologetic -
you have a light,
you are a flame,
fierce and bright.

Sometimes it moves close to the surface,
the glow simmering just under your skin.
And if you crack, remember,
life can make a home in the smallest of fissures.

You are your own light,
you give yourself life,
even if it’s just a refraction;
because remember:
What makes a rainbow?

The Depths of a Child's Dreams

The Depths of a Child's Dreams by Morphicelus The Depths of a Child's DreamsOnce upon a child’s dreams
A gruesome creature surfaced
And dragged them to the depths of the seas
Our creature of death menaced
The child struggled and tried to escape
And the last of the sky he sees
The last ray of light loses its shape
He lost all chance of being free
The creature is giant
Humanoid with a face of a demon
Resembling some kind of mermaid
Its tail malevolently swayed
It locked our boy up in a cage
The creature held its new prisoner with pride
And the boy filled with fear and rage
Had no one in which to abide
The world without his smile
Begun to fade after a while
She relished his light in darkest deep with joy
eternal torment for her new toy

Light in the Dark by AntiLucky A Light In The Darkness (Contest Entry)(A/n: WARNING! This gets a little dark. There is a scene in which a character almost commits suicide.)
Feels like you're all alone
Stuck in these highs and lows
Strapped in a merry-go-round and round in circles
The little girl sat watching her grandfather, an Alzheimer's patient, as he lay in a hospital be, unable to remember how to move.
"Hey Granddaddy. If you can hear me, and if this is the last time I see you on earth, I want to tell you that, I love you."
It had been a long year for the girl. Her dad had lost his job, which meant they had to move to their grandparents' house, her grandfather's Alzheimer's was progressing, and her grandmother had broken her leg. Her family had been slowly breaking apart.
And now here she was. Sitting with her grandfather, as he slowly disappeared.
A tear formed in the corner of her eye as she thought about all the fun times they had together, the memories they hade made. He had been in perfect health, yet one little disease had destroyed it

Please only write the number assigned to the pair beside the places.

Check here for common questions that I usually get!

Q & A:
"Do we vote in the comments or send a note with our choices?"
Answer: Feel free to comment with your choice but if you are uncomfortable with that,  send your vote via note to CollaborativeMinds!

"Can contestants vote? Can they vote for themselves?"
Answer: Yes! and No.

"Do I have to read all of the literature?"
Answer: Of course not, if you would like to vote for art only, just write "Art Only" above your placed works.

"Why do some of the thumbs look identical for art and literature"
Answer: if you write a literary work but use an image as "cover", it appears like that image, not a writing work. It's just a "book cover". If you open it, you can read the literary work. (thanks for this answer LaChicaRara)

"Can I change my vote, or is it already locked in?"
Answer: You can change your vote if you like, just make sure that you do it in the original comment. You have until July 27th to make any changes. I won't be totaling them until the 28th.

When it came to written pieces I was mostly interested on how well the theme was present. By art pieces more how well they worked together with the written ones. I am a dummy!

And I got lost in some of the literature pieces. :dizzy: revamp  I'm not a good reader. :B :P

It is difficult to go through literature, especially to people who are not native to English. Thanks for trying, I manage to get lost in some pieces of literature as well, and just have to re-read it. I know that some people who are writing these works are not English Natives as well and they can be a bit choppy.
