My Finest Macro Yet

It's true...I think this may be my finest, most well thought-out macro yet. This is an extreme close-up of the Apple logo on the back of an Apple Remote. It's teeny: A little bit smaller than a hearing aid battery - LR41 to be exact - I held one up to the logo for reference. I did this in a light tent with fluorescent lights to left and right. I attached the remote to a weighted "helping hands" unit using masking tape on the bottom and rotated the unit so the light reflected in such a way as to make the reflective white of the remote glow, whereas the etched less-reflective surface glow less. I used my 100mm macro lens 1:1, and had to not only manually focus out to the minimal focusing distance, but I had to move and rotate the remote so it was just perfectly focused in the range to get as close as possible without cropping. Oh, did I mention this isn't cropped at all?

Anyone interested in wallpaper? If so, I'll probably put it here on DeviantART - they have a pretty good facility for wallpaper stuff. Just let me know what resolution in comments here and I'll see what I can do. :heart:

Edit: I look at this a few minutes after I posted this, and I'm thinking "Wow, well, this looks just like a professional shot of a product..." and it makes me wonder if product art like this is still considered fine art, or if it's just commercial? I dunno. I struggle with this sometimes.

At first I thought you were just crazy. Finest macro ever? You just took a picture of your Macbook or something. Then I read what it actually is and now I'm totally floored and in awe.

Sweet! Yeah, isn't that logo awesome? I'd been taking pictures of various Mac-related stuff recently (posting most of them over on my Flickr account [link] ) and decided that I should try my hand at taking a 1:1 macro shot, as close as possible with the 100mm lens. Was super tricky to get it into just the right position...imagine the depth of field at 5.9 inches to subject! :) I'd move a little bit and it'd be out of focus. *Laughs*

i think it's pretty; looks too perfect to be a photograph, in a way!

beautiful. still fine art IMO; not like it's some stagnant shot purely for the purpose of displaying the product!

That's true. The purpose wasn't to sell or display the product. I wanted to make something pretty. :)

Very nice work! :)

Personally, I don't see why product art shouldn't be art, but... I suppose it is a fine line :/

Thank you! :)

Eh...definitions. I mean, it is what it is. That's one of the reasons why I have so many problems with deviantART: it's so hard to define your art...put it into a box, say it's X or Y. You know?
FelixKilldeer's avatar
Yeah, I run into that problem all the time, too...
Guess I misunderstood what you were saying ^^;
