Achen Commission by AmandaTurnage Achen Commission by AmandaTurnage
A long overdue commission for :iconhelloheath:
Her two characters Spice and Achen. You may remember Spice (the kitten) from a previous commission I did for =helloheath ---> [link]

I really struggled with Achen. I just can't really draw wolves and I had to use several references from the internet to figure out where the joints and muscles were in the legs @_@
I also always have a problem with the fourth leg on four-legged creatures. I can draw the first three ok but then it takes forever to find the perfect pose for the fourth without making it look awkward. It takes me FOREVER. I'm somewhat satisfied with the paws on this piece though I think the perspective is a bit off. Achen's front right paw looks like it's about to fling forward and knock Spice right off his little feet. Achen's also supposed to be an adolescent/young wolf and I think I made him look too old. D:
I was going to add more color to this in photoshop but after experimenting for a bit, I decided that I really liked the simplicity of this composition and color scheme. I need to learn to keep things simple.

Anyway (that was a long ramble) I hope you like it =helloheath !!

Sketch done traditionally with pencil.
I do not own these characters. Achen and Spice belong to =helloheath

Commissions are closed as of now. I'm very stressed at the moment and am considering a hiatus. :(

see its very confusing.

but i like it.there was a scientific study on that slightly different to this but it said that if the letters in the middle of the word were jumbled up and the first and last letters were that same you can still read it. its about the shame of the word i think....

e.g

I hvae to go bcaesue I hvae hmeowrok.

I think your problem with the wolf's paws is that you drew that wrist joint too far up. It needs to be a smidgen lower. Here's a photo of my Zena in nearly the same pose as Archen to show you the wrist joint-> [link]

If you having problems finding references of wolves (I tend to find there are more head shots than full body), you can always look at domesticated dogs as the two are cousins. Huskies, malamutes, wolfhounds and a few other breeds are very close not only in build and look but also in genetics to wolves.

Zena is smaller and less fuzzy than her cousin the wolf, but in terms of reference you can see her poses better.

hmm I see what you mean! I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I have to draw a wolf or similar pup. :3 Thanks for the info! I appreciate the critique. :aww:

It's hard, I know. I have the same trouble when I draw bunnies leaping. I keep asking myself, "Why does this look wrong?" It turns out that wrist joint is usually too high or too low. When it's in the right place, it looks wrong!

The only problem when you're looking at the picture of Zena is that her breed is renowned for their hare-like paws and not wolf paws (German Shepards have the aforementioned wolf paw). Her breed is actually hardwired to kill rodents and small game but can be trained for bringing down big game like deer, bears and cougars on top of the rodents.

It's no problem. It's really good other than that wrist joint problem!

You're welcome! I'm glad you think it turned out ok. :aww: I definitely want to draw wolves more often. This was a good way of tackling some of the issues I had with their anatomy. :D

I know how you feel! When you do creative stuff for a living it's hard doing something creative for yourself later. You just want to veg out and give your mind a break.
