Manuary - What the Forest Raised

The forest was their home. Paint on their faces, double blades in their hands, furs across their backs. They were children of the wilderness, skulking through darkness to catch their prey and bind themselves ever closer to their god. The Dark Hunter had chosen them to follow his path. And they knew that leaving behind everything that once mattered in their previous lives was only the beginning. —- Blood on the stone. Wind tangled through their wild hair as they bled their prey, later skinning it and collecting trophies. He never came to mark them as his in gratitude, but the tales made it clear that one night he would emerge from between the trees and take them with him—to hunt forever, to grant them eternal life. They would be eternal as he was. Eternal as the forest. — The hunt. They learned to eat through the still living tissue, their bloody footprints left in the pine needles and mossy earth. At night, when the cries of nocturnal birds pierced the air and leaves crunched

a partial year

i. it is November and I am learning how to speak again waking to find I have misplaced my pulse the dam broke unswallowing everything ii. December descends unmoored but ends unknowingly anchored it is here we really begin tentative steps toward synchronized breaths teaching a year to float iii. January finds me spilling explaining every mess of me (pretty strings and mournful voices) learning all your aches from head to heart and maybe (growing somewhere) there's a spark but I'm only reaching out a hand to offer shelter iv. it's fitting it was February not a shift more a splitting these wilder vines branching an additional direction (a heart turned blue) and yes some fabled arrow found a target least expecting but slayed nothing only grew I had already built a home inside myself for you what's another room or two? viii. June comes wrapped in fog with teeth I am crippled and calling for doctors I am the panic

I didn’t know what quiet felt like until your voice made a home in my chest. Not the absence of sound— but the kind of stillness that feels like safety. Like a door closing gently on everything that once hurt. Thirty years on this earth, and I never found a beekeeper until now. People called me complicated. Too much. Too loud inside. But you, you never flinched at the buzzing. You walked into the swarm, hands steady, heart open, and the bees, somehow, listened. You don’t just love me, you steady me. The sharp edges, the spirals, the old ache I thought no one could see. You look at all of it and still choose to stay. That’s the kind of love that rearranges a life. I look at you and forget what loneliness ever felt like. With you, even silence has meaning.
