Cheerwell Maker by AlvarezAzel Cheerwell Maker by AlvarezAzel
Picture of Cheerwell Maker (Che) from the "Shadows of the Apt" series of books.
This scene in particular is taken from book 5 "The Scarab Path" where Che goes off to Khanaphes to learn more about herself.
Khanaphes is an Egyptian like city which has not progressed technology wise for over 500 years.
Che is a beetle kinden, hardworking and stuborn.
She has also learnt the gift of flight and night seeing.

Thank you to Adrian Tchaikovsky for giving me permission to draw his characters and for writing such a fantastic series of books.

Drawn and coloured in Open Canvas 1.1.

Very nice work! Just one thing:
Stupid question, but what's the rings around her legs? Is she wounded or is that something you picture all Beetle-kinden have?

Hey, thanks :)
I did this picture around 8 years ago but from what I can remember the stuff around her legs are rags.
Not something I picture all beetle kinden having, this is Che from the Scarab Path book. I pictured her with worn and torn ragged clothes, Similar to moth kinden wear.

Ahh I see. Got it.
I'm currently in the middle of reading The Scarab Path actually. Any plans on making more Shadows of the Apt artwork?

It's certainly something I have considered, Perhaps I might go back to doing some more.
I'm also about halfway through rereading the series too.
As for who to draw next time maybe Tynisa or Stenwold, maybe Thalric. who knows maybe another Che as she was my personal fave character in the books.

Ahh good!
Can you tell me without spoilers if the upcoming books are again more connected like the first 4 or more standaloneish like Scarab Path seems to be?
My vote for future artwork would be Princess/Empress Seda. I'm already having a sense of gloom and dread about where her character is going to go, but I still feel for her. If you're going to draw Che, I'd like to see her together with Achaeos.
Either way, have fun rereading them!

The next book Sea Watch is similar in a stand alone way like Scarab Path, I REALLY enjoyed both of these books namely because Sten and Che are my favorite character's.
The one after Seawatch, Heirs of the blade is slightly more Tynisa focused but from then on the later 3 books kind of meld together really well.
I'm very excited about rereading them again as they easily stand up to be IMO the best book series ever.
The characters and the lore world building is just incredibly deep and well done.

Once you have finished the 10 main Shadows books I highly recommend the further 2 additional books Spoils of war and A time for Grief.
These go deeper into the side characters stories and I highly enjoyed these too.

And again once you have read those do check out adrian's other books, Children of time and Guns at dawn were stand out book for me so far.
Currently i'm part way through the bear and the serpent, which is the 2nd book in a trilogy he is working on. loving it so far.

Good to know.
It's going to take me a while to get through them all, since I like to alternate between reading a Fantasy and reading a SciFi novel these days after having read nothing but Fantasy the last two years, but I fully intend to read all 10.
Anyway really pleased to hear, that the future ones still hold up. My favourite Fantasy author so far has been Raymond E. Feist, but I have to admit that after the original Riftwar trilogy the quality declined even though the Kelewan trilogy was brilliant again, but that one seems to have been more the work of his co-author Janny Wurts there.

Hello
Thank you, I'll certainly take a look when I get some time to sit down and do something.
Unfortunately I havent done any more characters recently though I do hope to get one of Tynisa from the "heir of the blade" book when I get time.
Also been thinking of doing one for Thalric and possibly Stenwold too :]

She looks fantastic! I searched on DA for her name and it didn't show up! But I knew someone had to have drawn this wonderful character somewhere!

Great Art. This is more what I had in mind from the first books than the cover art of The Scarab Path.

Thanks, I did use the first books character descriptions to do this picture. I really liked the idea of Che having short blonde hair with a darker skin :]

Thanks, The Scarab Path IMO is the best book yet, much better written and alot easier to follow as it mostly centres around a handful of characters.
Hope you enjoy it, I certainly did :] one of the best books I have ever read.
