Yeah, he's super strict and kind of a hardcase, but he does what he does to keep his people safe, like a good ruler should. He gives Ariel a hard time but it's only because he loves her and doesn't want her to get hurt.

Could he stand to lighten up? Yes. A lot? Very yes.

Still, he's not a bad guy, and he's actually kind of a badass when it comes down to it.
