A Message From My Sponsor

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 17, 2013, 12:24 PM
Hey all, my girlfriend :iconlovelovelace: asked me to share her friend's Indegopop fundraiser. Laamberry has been making some of the most professional silicon mermaid tails I've ever seen. I'm happy to say her patronage by several professional outlets that have purchased her tails also supports my opinion! LOL. Now she's looking to take it to a full-time business so please check it out if you're interested.

"My good friend Laamberry is running an Indiegogo to raise money to revamp her mermaid business!! I will be working along side her and drawing pictures for the higher level donations and designing a new line of mermaid products IF this goes through.

Her work is impeccable and honestly one of the best mermaiders on the market--plus she is the creator of the Avenger Bunnies and the maker of my Captain America suit.  :) (Smile)

Please give it a look and perhaps even a bit of funding :D (Big Grin) It's going to a great cause and to what could be the start of an amaaazing business opportunity!!!"

How to Skin Your Puppet

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 19, 2013, 8:37 AM
Over time a lot of people have asked me what is the process for making a fleece skin for puppets. While I've been making a certain "Avatar mentor" for the next Nickelodeon Puppetbender video, I've actually had the presence of mind to take photos along the way to finally answer that question!

Puppebenders Come to Korra DVD and Blu-Ray!

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 9, 2013, 12:54 PM
Well they finally said it, so now I can too! The Legend of Korra Bluray & DVD special features specify:

The next generation of Korra-themed Puppetbenders has lept from YouTube to Nick home video! :) ...Sorry that means you have to pay for it :( But it's in Hi-Def! :D And you won't have to suffer through YouTube ads!

Catching Fire Arena on Google Maps

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 5, 2013, 10:09 AM
For those of you who have seen my 75th Hunger Games Arena Visual Guide...
75th Hunger Games Arena Visual Guide by alternatecoppa
...I was just alerted to the fact that Google Maps has been updated with overhead satellite images of the filming set for the arena's central pool for the upcoming movie adaptation of Catching Fire. A delightfully ironic twist seeing as how I made my own map using stitched satellite photos from Google earth.

Filming took place last summer at a man-made beach in Georgia's Clayton County, a site that was orginally built for the 1996 Olympics. Full story here:…

If you look, you can spot many of the exact same landmarks I was able to visualize from the book's descriptions depicted in the partial set (to be no doubt completed in full later with careful editing and CGI) that was physically built on the site:

You can check it out for yourself! The movie's Cornucopia can be found at roughly 33░31'24.29"N 84░18'43.31"W…

J.J. Abrams To Direct New 'Star Wars' Movie For Disney…

At least if he wants to include any farting aliens like George did, they'll be obscured by lens flares!

...In all honesty, this actually great news! :)

Long time no news... That I can share yet

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 22, 2012, 11:41 AM
Been a while since I shared anything on DeviantArt. I see a lot of journals here start that way... Allow me to add to their volume! :D

What happened? Did comic con go well? The answer to that is yes! Our Avatar fan panel was highly enjoyable success and meeting our guest panelists Mae Whitman (voice of Katara) and Dante Basco (voice of Zuko) was a real highlight!

As well as be able to present a newly made puppet Korra to Bryan Konietzko as well as have the lovely Janet Varney (voice of Korra) play with her for the Entertainment Weekly cameras!

So what's next for the Legend of Puppetbender? I can't give full details yet but it's something very cool, very soon, and not just for YouTube! ;)
I'm excited to share more when I can but rest assured, all the Korra characters are going to be making their way to puppet form with several new videos in the pipeline! -I know I've said that before with long delays in the past, but c'mon! Have I ever not fulfilled the promise eventually? :D Plus like said, there's a special new incentive in the works...!

For over 5 years, the organizers of this fan panel have been bringing together both fans and professionals. Moderated by Avatar_Mom, this year's panel will include Bobby Rubio (Avatar the Last Airbender, Pixar, Alcatraz High), Freelance Concept Artist DJ Welch (Dark Kenjie), Kevin Coppa (Puppet Benders), and Actor/Voice Actor Dante Basco (Avatar the Last Airbender), artist Chifuyu Sasaki and colorist Naoko Kawano of Gurihiru, the team behind Dark Horse's ongoing Avatar graphic novels- And perhaps a few more surprise guests. Saturday, July 14th 12.15 - 1:30: Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra cosplay gathering #2:
Location: Across Ballroom 20D (by the windows facing the ocean)

Again, IF cosplayers are being forced by security to move from that location then it will be at the bottom of the big stairs located outdoors in the back of the convention center.

:iconatallearthbender: Then finally, aTallearthbender shared this awesome information. Here's a snippet of his post for everyone:

"...In addition to all the exciting events surrounding Legend of Korra and Avatar The Last Airbender, please come out and support TEAM AVATAR, which consist of some of the biggest fans of the Avatar series. We are excited to be a part of such an amazing event and we hope that all of you wonderful, dedicated fans will join us at this year's Comic Con Masquerade!!!!!"
8:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14 in Ballroom 20 of the Convention Center
The event will run three hours, and doors will open at 7:45 p.m. for audience seating. As the line will start forming long before then, early arrival is suggested. Tickets for seating will be given out FREE to people in the line beginning at 2:00 PM. A ticket guarantees a seat, so you need not stay in line after you receive yours. After tickets have been distributed to the people in line, any that may remain from the 3,900 available will be given out at the Masquerade Desk. Should you be unable to obtain tickets there will also be overflow seating in the Sails Pavilion and in other ballrooms where the show will be projected on giant screens. Reserved seating is available for convention special guests...

That's the hap's for now. We'll be sure to share more info as we're made aware of it. Hope to see you all there!

I'm on KorraKast!

Woo! Late entry, but I wanted to share that I was afforded the opportunity to be a guest on Avatar's podcast, KorraKast:…

I joined Collin, Jon, Daniel, Susan and Casey for discussion on the latest episodes of the show as well as giving what I have to say is easily the lengthiest interview I've ever done on the making of Puppetbenders! Thanks so much to Collin & his crew for asking such great questions and making me feel like someone who actually knows something :D LOL!

I talk all about how I make the puppets and where you can find the patterns I started with for the Puppetbenders like Project

Bestest Friend in All Space and Time

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 28, 2012, 9:23 AM
Steven Ricks-The bestest friend in all of space & time! (And the tailor of my Ultimate Tennant GAP suit) Since he and I roomed at this last year's Gallifrey One convention and we own many of the same costume items, he found he wound up with an extra Duffer Of St. George tie of mine when unpacking back home in the UK...

So he told me he was FedExing it back to me... When I got the package this morning & opened it, in true Steve Ricks fashion, I found he had included something extra he hadn't told me about- A bag from the official Doctor Who convention in Cardiff that was held this past weekend AND AN AUTOGRAPHED PROGRAM PERSONALIZED TO ME FROM MATT SMITH!!!! Steve, you're seriously the best!

This helps offset my complete envy that he got to tour the actual TARDIS set at Upper Boat Studios:

You can read his convention reports & see more photos from the event and the set on his blog here: eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot…

New Puppetbenders Video! The Truth Must Be Shared

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 21, 2012, 10:08 PM

On February 21st the creators of Avatar The Last Airbender took to YouTube to tell us about the new upcoming series Legend of Korra and the new online fanclub "KORRA NATION" that was being set up to deliver us news about the upcoming series. If you didn't see it, here's the link:…

I'm sorry to report however that the Mike DiMartino seen inviting us to compete for "sweet prizes" was not our favorite, bespectacled, animation Producer... It was a fake! Specifically Puppet Aang- Who was himself reported missing not long after the video was posted, as you may have seen in my last journal update:…

I hope Agent Robert Eran hasn't fooled you into thinking he or his Agency were the innocent party in this turn of events because today I bring you THE TRUE STORY behind the Korra Nation Announcment that the Counter Terrorism Task Force doesn't want you to see!

It's not pretty, it's not pleasant, but the truth must be known!

Korra Nation: The TRUE Story

Video Cast & Crew:
Kevin Coppa - Jacob Schultz - Joe Huck - Kevin Cammarata - Bill Czopek - Amanda Cohen

I know it's been a long time since I've made any new Puppetbenders videos. I can only point to a dearth of new source material as the reason why inspiration hasn't hit me until now. But of course we know that's all changing! ;)

Puppet Aang Missing!

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 8, 2012, 3:36 PM
On February 20th, 2012 Puppet Aang went missing from his place of residence...

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should contact the United States Counter Terrorism Task Force immediately.

~new puppetbenders coming oh so soon!~ ;)

Mike, Bryan and Joaquim Just Made My Week!

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 21, 2012, 6:20 PM
Okay so not only is it incredible that the producers of Avatar are creating a place to give us all updates about the upcoming Lengend of Korra, which incidentally you can sign up for at FACEBOOK.COM/LEGENDOFKORRA wherein you can ALSO earn points toward amazing Avatar prizes for sharing your personal links to the updates...

Special Video Message:

...But it would also seem that Mike DiMartino has been transformed into a fleecy little Aang I presented them with back in 2008 ;)
A Gifted Puppetbender Aang by alternatecoppa
Thanks you guys! Both for that little treat AND for Legend of Korra- which I know is going to ROCK everyone's socks (and sock puppets) off! :excited:

P.S. Thanks too for the shout-out on your Tumblr Bryan!…
As for making you a Korra Puppet? Maybe if you guys are nice enough to come back to SDCC this year there might be a lil' sumthin' for you along those lines

Told You We're On Matt Smith's Phone

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 23, 2011, 8:03 AM
For those who maybe didn't believe the story I told about our group meeting Matt Smith & Karen Gillian at this past summer's Comic Con and having them snap photos of us for themselves on their mobile devices, have a look at this clip from the Friday Dec 23rd, Graham Norton Show :)

Ignore Gillian Anderson (yeah I couldn't believe that was her either) and check out Matt's comments in the last 40 seconds.

For fun here's the photoshopped version of our Matt Smith/Karen Gillan pic with the 4th doctor added- as it should be. He would have been there but for a few mistimed minutes anyway. Even though that unintentionally mimicked "The Five Doctors" pretty closely. Minus the wax Tom Baker statue...…

Watch Nicktoons' Avatar Marathon Clips

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 6, 2011, 12:10 PM
Can you remember aaaallll the way back to July's San Diego Comic Con when we had our Avatar Fan Panel? If not, you may want to consider some medical attention because it wasn't that long ago at all...

For those of you who do take their B Vitamins and maybe even were there, you may recall that before the panel got started, several lucky fans got to be interviewed by NickToons Pickboy to be used as commercial bumpers for an upcoming all-day Avatar marathon. The term "bumper" for those who may not know is a broadcasting tern for a brief announcement, that can contain a voice over and/or video graphics, placed between a pause in the program and its commercial break, and vice versa.

I'd heard reports that they were airing them here-and-there on the channel already, but this past Labor Day weekend finally saw the advent of the all day, 24-hour Avatar The Last Airbender Marathon-A-Thon during which, they played what appeared be clips from all the interviews they shot with us at the fan panel.

In case you missed them, I went ahead and DVR'd (is that even a real term yet? Can I be the guy who coined that one?) all the clips that contained footage shot of fans at the panel. Yeah they had some of the bumpers showcase the Danny Phantom guy and the gaunt-faced, Sk8tR dude from that staged MTV reality show & movie tickets online theater ads... But who cares about them? They get their day in the sun all the time. It's the Avatards we care about!

So without further ado here's a link to watch all the clips in the order they first aired (some aired multiple times) during the 24 hour marathon all edited together for easy consumption (aka less Bionicle and Back at the Barnyard ads sandwiched in between):

-You'll get to see fans like Kim :iconkimba616: dressed as Royal Armor Zuko,
-Nadar :iconatallearthbender: as a perfectly scaled Avatar Kyoshi,

-Katlin as Firenation Suki- Don't you fret Katlin, he doesn't know what a Power Cuff is either!

-Puppet Zuko- who finally reveals the secret to keeping his hair looking so stylin'

And many more! Of course I can't remember everyone's names so if you're on Deviantart & see yourself in there, drop me a line and let me know your name! I'd love to give you a shout-out and ID you for your fellow fans.

Comic Con Avatar Fan-Panel Report

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 29, 2011, 8:46 AM
So how was Comic Con you ask? Exhausting. But if you've been there before you already know that and would rather hear some details of what went on rather than listen to people whine about how much their legs hurt after the first day. SO lets share some pics and details about - AVATAR!

First of all, if you haven't seen photos & details from the official Nickelodeon Legend of Korra Panel, allow me to re-direct to the journals of several other DA members who have kindly rounded up a batch of links that give you full coverage of that event:
:icongreenifyme:… :iconrufftoon:…

Then, if you'd like HEAR some details about the Korra panel, then may I suggest checking out the live video podcast I did this past Wednesday along with Dave Roman on Jerzy Drozd's "Comics Are Great!" Together we talk Korra, The Puppetbenders, what's ahead for new puppet videos, and get into just general Avatar fan-geeking as well. I also publicly let out my rage over the live action film and Final Cut Pro 10. Maybe not the smartest moves but by-golly, if they didn't both have it coming.

Click Here To Check It Out→

You'll find that links to their main page for the podcast episode along with all the show notes. The interview view is on YouTube- just scroll down the page to see the embedded video.

SO let's get back to Comic-Avatar-Con. That's right, I'm not going to talk about Doctor Who. Shock! I've posted about a bazillion photos on that subject already and that should be good enough. I don't sleep in the pinstripe suit contrary to popular belief. Although considering the overall cost it took to make it, maybe I should…

By the way, all images you see in this journal have totally been stolen from Dave Roman, Ryan Harvey and El Rich. Sorry guys, I'm a camera-less picture thief but at least I admit it.

The secondary event of the day, even though it took place earlier on Saturday was our Fan-Group panel. I'm not sure how many events this makes for Avatar_Mom's :iconethereal-glutton: Avatar-Legacy Fan Panels, but I'm happy to say we must be nearing the double digits by now. Out of all of them however, in my mind this one was one of the very best and went as smooth as butter & was filled to the brim with Avatar fan-goodness. Just like a fresh-baked pastry! (Can you tell I'm writing this close to my lunch break?)

The featured panelists were John O'Bryan and Ian B. Graham, :iconibgraham: a writer and storyboard artist on the original series respectively. Both very nice guys who shared their memories of tight deadlines, difficult-to-draw-characters and great appreciation for having been able to work on such a great series.

The featured fan artists were the VERY talented Isia and Booter Freak :iconisaia: :iconbooter-freak: They put together a hilarious Keynote slideshow of their work over the years and discussed the fan's active roles online through the years.

Before the panel got started, several lucky fans got to be interviewed by NickToons Pickboy to be used as commercial bumpers for an upcoming all-day Avatar marathon.

Even Puppet Zuko got to jump in for a pair of "You're watching Avatar on NickToons" sound bytes. Keep an eye out to see if they use them on TV… Or if they totally don't use any of them at all. You never know how those things are going to go. :D TV production is a fickle mistress.

Our panel moved along smoothly aided by our awesome MC, The Cabbage Merchant (aka Victor). Who would have known he had a voice made for radio when he's not screaming, "MY CABBAGES!!!"

We had some additional surprise guest speakers in the form of Dave Roman and Alison Wilgus :iconyaytime: :iconaliwildgoose: of Avatar comics fame. Fans in attendance also saw a return visit from actor Dee Bradly Baker and a first time visit from Jennifer Hale. For those who may not know, Dee voiced both Appa and Momo and Jennifer was the voice of Bounty Hunter Jun. Dee shared the news with us that his daughter recently played the voice-over role of a young Korra in the new series!

Things then moved onto the cosplay contest and for those of you who showed up… Good grief you didn't make it easy for any of us to judge you. I know that sounds like a generic compliment that always get tossed around, but seriously- Avatar cosplay is really hitting it's A–game stride.

The eventual first place winner was Atallearthbender :iconatallearthbender: for his Avatar Kyoshi costume… Not to mention the dude was LIFE-SIZE Kyoshi as well. Prizes distributed included free comics from Dark Horse, hand-made gifts made by Avatar fans, and a HUGE Appa plush donated by k3k4 :iconk3k4:

Overall it was just a phenomenally good time and a great appetizer for the big Korra panel just a few hours later... Of which we all ran out of the room as fast as we could to go squat through 5 hours of Marvel presentations to see. But it was well worth it! ;)

A BIG THANKS to everyone who participated in making the day so awesome- both fans and Avatar cast & crew alike.

And of course you may be noticing something "Puppetish" and "Korraish" throughout these photos… Well, we'll just have to wait and see just what's in store for all that. ;)

One thing's for sure- After seeing all the new Korra designs and that INSANELY cool trailer, I'm going to have to seriously up my Puppet game. Maybe even redesign the look of the puppets completely. Hmmmm...

SDCC Avatar Panels!

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 7, 2011, 11:12 AM

Along with my good friend, Ethereal-Glutton :iconethereal-glutton: I'm happy to share that there will be an Avatar the Last Airbender Fan Panel at this year's SDCC on Saturday morning. Thanks to her hard work, Avatarlegacy Fan Panels has been given another opportunity to organize a tribute to the fandom!

The best part? Just as we were fortunate to have some of the crew ATLA with us at Anime Expo last year, we're proud to announce that John O'Bryan and Ian B. Graham will be on hand to talk to fans about their experience working on the show.

John O'Bryan is the credited writer behind many Avatar episodes from all three seasons such as,  "The Waterbending Scroll" "The Library" and "The Headband" just to name a few. You'll have to ask him why he's the Master of the Flying Guillotine yourself since he took us by surprise on that one as well. Hopefully only a few heads will roll.

:iconibgraham: Ian B. Graham served as a storyboard artist for the series and shares a lot of his past ATLA work right here on DA (click his icon there to check it out) He's also currently working on *drumroll* The Legend of Korra as well! I do believe he's forbidden to talk about any details from the show however, so don't get your hopes up for any spoilers. Any juicy secrets relating to the original series should be fair game though! ;)

:iconisaia: Our fan spotlight features the work of well-known artist Isaia who's had work commissioned for the all-Avatar editions of Nick Magazine as well as having been featured in a fan interview on the Season 3 DVD box set special feature, "Women of Avatar."

:iconbooter-freak: Our fan spotlight continues with Booter-Freak renown Avatar fanartist and fanhumorist (I coined a new phrase!) If you haven't seen the kind of crazy things Booter and Isaia get up to together be sure to check out this Deviation:

:iconalternatecoppa: Finally, I'll be there too. Yeah I know, me again. But I'll have the Puppetbenders with me and they're always far more entertaining then I am anyhow! I'm scared to promise this because of the tight deadline... But I'm currently working right now on a new Puppet video (the first in almost a full year!) and I (barring disaster) intend to premiere it at the panel! As a clue as to whom it stars, I'll simply say it's not any of the current Puppets you've seen so far! *wink* *wink* ;) Cross your fingers for me that I can get it all done in time!

I don't have any real details to share but word on the street is that there will be an official Nickelodeon Avatar panel later that same day as well as word there should be an autograph signing! So it looks like all of Saturday at SDCC is going to an incredible Avatar revival! Be sure to save time in your schedule to make it to all the events, but if you do have to skip one or two then just make sure you come ours... Kidding! ;)

Nicktoons will have a film crew wandering around SDCC to film various Nickelodeon shenanigans. I know they plan to roam about the convention on Thursday... could this mean that there will be many Nickelodeon offerings to enjoy on Thursday? Maybe something an Avatar fan would be interested in attending? Its possible...

Hopefully the film crew will stick around through the weekend. This could mean that they might stop into our fan panel. I hope they do! They will experience an amazing group of creative, caring, and thoughtful fans, all excited about everything Avatar... from the beginning and beyond :)

Just in case the image at the top of this journal fails to load, again here's the where & when of the panel:

Avatar the Last Airbender Fan Group
Saturday, July 23
Room: Santa Rosa
11:00 - 12:00 PM

I can't wait! I don't believe we've had an-all Avatar Day convention event like this since 2008! I hope to see you all there and FEEL FREE to copy and share the digital flyer image at the top of this journal anywhere you like!
