Southern Africa is the region where Brazil is most vulnerable. The colony keeps access to the East and provides the coal it needs. Thus Conan XII takes advantage of the Anglo-Saxons having their fleet occupied in the North Atlantic to take advantage.

Brazil launches a massive assault on English Angola in December 1870 with the bulk of its battleships and 200,000 men. Angola is defended by 60,000 English but can count on Boer reinforcements from Vrijland since Angola is connected to Mozambique by the Transafrican railway completed in 1869.

It takes 5 months for the Brazilians to take Angola, driving the English towards Vrijland. Without waiting, in June 1871 the Brazilians launch the assault against Vrijland and manage to take Mozesburg, the capital of Vrijland, Calvinia and Vrijhaven. The Boers and the English on the continent found themselves isolated but continued their resistance in the north.

Simultaneously a Brazilian armada of 21 battleships and 100,000 men attacked Duego Suarez, a large English base. But since the peace in Europe, the English sent 35 battleships and 65 conventional vessels (with 50,000 men).

The Battle of Diego Suarez (July 12, 1871) ended with a Brazilian defeat, losing 4 battleships and, above all, 30,000 men. They had to take refuge in Delagoa.

The Brazilians are then on the defensive and withdraw their fleet. With 1,400,000 soldiers on site, they think they will be able to hold out despite the English blockade that is being set up.

The English seize the coast of Mozambique and build a railway to open up the Vrijland where there are 500,000 Anglo-Boer soldiers and militia. It will be completed in July 1872 just in time to avoid famine.
