At the end of 1872, Brazil without a sufficient fleet loses its colonies one after the other.Conan XII is contested by the nationalists because of the military failures but also by the workers and the bourgeoisie because of the war economy and the related shortages.

However, the Transamerican is ready to pour its troops into Central America.The fleet has 41 battleships against 130 for the Anglo-Saxons but distributed elsewhere.

In February 1873 the Battle of Honduras began. The Brazilians launched 1,200,000 soldiers against 600,000 US. The battle lasted three months and caused the death of 800,000 men, including 300,000 US. The Brazilians have made little progress but the Yankee losses are very heavy and they are beginning to tire (900,000 dead out of 2,500,000 mobilized since 1870).

For his part, Conan XII embarks on board the largest battleship in the world, the Excalibur, launched 1 month earlier. At the head of a fleet of 35 battleships and 400 transports with 152,000 men, he heads for Africa but in fact intends to save Conania.

After 70 days at sea, the Brazilian fleet reaches its destination. But the English have spies everywhere and they have time to send 30 battleships and attack the Brazilian fleet at Cape Roz on April 22, 1873.

The Brazilian fleet and the English fleet suffer comparable losses: 9 battleships on the English side and 12 on the Brazilian side. If the Brazilian expeditionary force manages to land, Conan XII dies in the explosion of the Excalibur that he imprudently sent in front. His death will be hidden until June 1873. The victory is considered English.
