In 1870, the Emperor of the French, Napoleon III, was 62 years old. Ill and politically weakened, he wanted a quick victory against Prussia to break the Germanic Pact and consolidate his regime.

The Brazilians did not consider themselves ready and preferred to wait until 1873 for the Transamerican to be completed and for them to expand their fleet of battleships.

But Napoleon III ignored this following a Prussian provocation and declared war on July 19, 1870. The Prussians, who were preparing, attacked very quickly with their German allies. From the beginning of August 1870, the French (400,000 men) were in difficulty against the Germans (500,000 men).

Conan XII had 400,000 men in Spain but their equipment was not yet up to par (notably few breech-loading rifles).

This procrastination meant that the French remained alone until the defeat at Sedan (September 1, 1870) when Napoleon III was taken prisoner. This immediately led to the fall of his regime even though the war continued with the New Republic.

In Brazil, Conan XII was found guilty of the defeat of his ally and was forced to enter the conflict by engaging his Spanish troops: September 4, 1870.

The Germanic Pact is then activated:

- The United Kingdom enters the war: September 6, 1870.

- The USA enters the war: September 7, 1870.

Russia and the other European powers keep their distance.
