After the capture of Manila, the English continued their offensive by targeting the Guanabara Islands. This important Brazilian military site was defended by 20,000 Brazilians. The English would have to fight for four months to take the archipelago in October 1871.
The rest of the Brazilian possessions in Oceania were poorly defended.
In January 1872 the English landed in Western Conania which was taken in two months. In April 1872 they seized New Pernambuco and occupied the surrounding islands.
Then in May 1872 the English attacked Eastern Conania starting with Tasmania. Once they had acquired this base, they landed at Penitence and St Louis. These cities were better defended. The Brazilian forces decided to counterattack but were defeated at the Battle of Milleoies on August 13, 1872. St Louis and Penitence fell shortly after.
In November 1872 the English gathered 120,000 men and marched on Baie Royale, the capital of the colony defended by considerable but partly obsolete fortifications. The siege of the city began in December 1872.
