In India, the English (400,000 men) and the Brazilians (900,000 men) began to clash on their border. The Brazilians were numerous but suffered from obsolete weaponry.

After initial inconclusive clashes, the Brazilians withdrew into the considerable fortifications built on the border. The English did not seek to besiege them. They considered this front to be secondary.

In the East, the English forces took Manila after a daring attack (January 1871). The city and its bay had nevertheless benefited from very substantial fortifications and a large garrison of 40,000 Brazilians.

The capture of Manila opened the Pacific to the English. Hong Kong and Shanghai, which were poorly defended, fell quickly afterwards (early 1871). Guam was taken in April 1871. From then on, the English continued their offensive towards the east and south.
