What if Brittany had still been independent when America was discovered?
Here is that story!

After another failure on Florida in January 1833, mainly caused by logistical insufficiency due to the Brazilian naval blockade, the US concentrated on the Mississippi. They attacked Ste Hélène in July 1833 with a river fleet of 25 steam gunboats flanked by an army of 50,000 men supplied by 40 steamers.

The Brazilians have 30,000 men, 20 gunboats and are waiting for them in the new fortifications of Ste Hélène.

The siege of Ste Hélène lasted from July 12 to August 26. The Yankees fail to take the fort which blocks the Mississippi. The southern sea route is blocked. They attack at the same time the citadel of Ste Hélène. After several indecisive armed land clashes which disrupted US supplies, they had to lift the siege.

In the west, a Brazilian squadron of 600 cavalrymen coming from Oregon with 1000 local Indian warriors defeated a troop of 900 US cavalrymen on August 12, 1833: Battle of Menez Noirs (or Black Hills).

To achieve these successes, Brazil mobilized more than 120,000 soldiers and 50 warships. Which is starting to get very expensive.

So Brazil was ready to grant concessions to the USA which led to peace in March 1834.

On paper it is a US victory because it gains more territory in the north (75% of the Missouri basin) than it loses in the south (left bank Mississippi).
But they must recognize Brazilian primacy over the Spanish empire which is accompanied by the installation of numerous Brazilian settlers on their border.
