All that was missing was a pretext to launch the war. It would be the assassination of an Austrian dignitary on June 12, 1914 in Thessaloniki by Russian agents. The Germanics tried to bring Greece into their camp by promising it Constantinople.

After a period of uncertainty, Austria, supported by Germany, declared war on Russia on July 25, 1914. Then Germany declared war on France, which mobilized. Brazil prepared its troops in Spain to support France. Finally, the English declared war on Brazil to prepare the blockade of the North Atlantic.

The other countries, USA, Japan, Argentina, Italy, Vrijland, Türkiye, are waiting to see what happens next but are preparing.

The Germans intend to repeat their rapid victory of 1870 against France and then turn against the Russians.

In August they advance but lose time and troops against the many forts on the French border. The Brazilians from Spain have time to bring reinforcements. And the Germans must draw troops against the Russians who attack in the East. In September the Germans find themselves blocked in front of the French and must retreat. But they manage to push the Russians back to the East. In November the fronts stabilize. The Germans have failed in their lightning offensive, the war will be long...
