Argentina's change of alliance made control of the South Atlantic difficult for the English. The Brazilians wanted to take advantage of this and in August 1914 concentrated their fleet on the English Arsenal in Lagos (defended by 30,000 men), the only supply point for the English in the region. Without a base to resupply with munitions but especially with fuel, the battleships would be in difficulty.
The Brazilians landed 200,000 men in French Ivory Coast and attacked Lagos from the West. Half of the Brazilian fleet, 91 ships, came to attack Lagos by sea. The English responded by sending 99 ships.
A first confrontation took place at the Battle of Cotonou on September 5. The English lost 8 ships, the Brazilians 13. The victory was considered English but their fleet found itself facing a mined port of Lagos. Exposed in the open sea, unable to resupply quickly, the English had to withdraw as quickly as possible towards Morocco.
But the Brazilians had time to resupply in Dakar and helped by 3 French ships, they once again faced the English: Battle of Cape Verde (September 17). It was a clear defeat for the English who lacked ammunition and fuel. They lost 22 ships against 5 for the Brazilians.
Isolated Lagos was besieged by land and sea by 40 ships and 400,000 soldiers. It fell on October 21. The Brazilians had taken control of West Africa and the South Atlantic.
This victory led to the entry into the war of Argentina on the side of Brazil (September 20, 1914) but also of the USA on the side of the English who were unable to resist Brazil (September 21, 1914).
