The USA experienced a demographic growth similar to that of Brazil and doubled its population in 30 years. They also became the world's leading economy, favored by the separation of Brazil and Argentina.
In addition, they had to integrate Mexico, which constituted a highly strategic buffer zone with Brazil, the main enemy. The transoceanic canal of Tehuantepec built from 1879 to 1891 was protected behind 3 lines of defense in Central America. The Brazilians would build their own transoceanic canal a little later, the Darien Canal.
Northern Mexico, populated mainly by initially hostile Brazilian settlers, 6 million in 1910, was managed directly by the US colonial power: "Brazilian" Mexico.
Yankee settlers settled there (1.9 million in 1910) but did not mix with the Brazilians. These territories were pacified even if Brazilian bandits still infested the deserts of the wild west.
The rest of the territory was entrusted to local Hispanic notables. They seized the land and wealth and this was the main cause of the 1904-1905 revolt. The US repression was brutal and massive but some of the injustices were repaired. On the other hand, the puppet king Carlos de Bourbon did not support the repression and abdicated in 1904. Mexico became a federal republic on the US model in 1906.
The abolition of slavery in the USA was very gradual. It was only in 1901 that slavery completely disappeared. This explosive subject had been poisoning US political life for a long time. The mechanization of harvests was the main driver of total abolition.
