In the 1880s, the European powers resumed the conquest of Africa, which was completed before 1900.
The English managed to unify Egypt and Guinea. The French managed to link North Africa to West Africa. The English would have liked to avoid this development of the French colonies and to establish a link with Morocco, but the French beat them to it.
The Brazilians consolidated their position in the south by increasing the colonial population. They also sent settlers to the French colonies. They retained many supporters in English Morocco, among the Brazilian settlers but also among the Moorish converts.
The Vrijland Boer organized its new territory and continued its policy of confiscating the best land for the benefit of the Boers, a rapidly growing population.
Railways with an essentially military purpose were built to unify such vast territories. There were thus two trans-Saharan lines, one French and one English.
The English also built the Suez Canal from 1881 to 1889, which allowed them to bypass Brazilian Southern Africa.
