What if Brittany had still been independent when America was discovered?
Here is that story!

Dynasties and rulers
----------------------
From now on, South America is cut in two. Legally, it remains the same country but with two different regimes. The Principality of Argentina and the Spanish domain, cut in two, retain their particularities but are in fact protectorates.
In the north, the loyalist regime or Brazil where the king resides. Jean IX, 22 years old in 1880, actually lets Marshal François Martin Rohan (1815-1899) rule the country. The different councils elected by universal suffrage (municipal, parish, corporations) have local autonomy but central power is entirely in the hands of the king.
In the south, the rebel regime or Argentina. The king being in the north, a regent is appointed: Jules Rohan (1822-1889) who replaces the king. The local councils elected by universal suffrage appoint the General Councilors who vote on laws. It is a parliamentary monarchy with indirect voting.
In fact, power was exercised by the "Family": the members of the royal family, direct or bastard (Brazil actually practices polygamy) who represented 150,000 people (and 18,000 families) and shared the best positions.
During the Revolution of 1873, a third of the Family joined the rebels. The regime seized their property in the reconquered areas and they fled to Argentina with 5 million refugees.
In Brazil, the seized assets were nationalized, creating a kind of "Catholic Marxism". François Martin Rohan also widened the circle of power beyond the Family.
In Argentina, on the contrary, the Family managed to take control of the Councils and actually retain power, which takes on an oligarchic character. Economically, the regime is moving towards liberal oligarchic capitalism.
Argentina, which has 65 million inhabitants, is 87% Gallo (Brazilian French), with Hispanics (2%) no longer weighing very heavily. The Germanic community (9%) is much more influential.
Brazil with 97 million inhabitants is 55% Gallo. Hispanics are 8% but the arrival of 1.8 million refugees from North America in New Granada is affecting their domain. They keep their rights but more and more symbolically. On the contrary, the Germans (5%), too linked to the rebels are repressed and their language banned. The Breton community (21%) very loyal to the regime sees its rights increase and includes the Portuguese community (5%) which sees its language excluded from legal acts.
