The Chinese tried to counter this traffic by capturing the western trading posts of Canton. In 1839 Brazil and the United Kingdom united against China to force it to open up to Western trade. It’s the “War of Reconciliation” that sounds better than “Opium War.”
The Brazilian-English fleets crush the Chinese fleet and its land armies. The conflict ended in 1842 with the extension of Macao, English since 1833, and the annexation of Hong Kong by the Brazilians. China is forced to open up to Westerners who can trade and travel freely.
The Chinese defeat strongly impresses neighboring countries. The English took advantage of this to take possession of their reserved zone in Asia by capturing Burma in 1843 and Cambodia in 1846.
In 1848, the Brazilians forced Japan, which was part of their reserved zone, to open up by sending an impressive fleet.
