What if Brittany had still been independent when America was discovered?
Here is that story!

In 1853 Jean VIII died at the age of 72 after a reign of 52 years. In reality he left power to his father, then to his wife and finally to his son, Conan Le Fur, who succeeded him under the name of Conan XI (1802-1853-1854).

Under his reign his empire grew considerably and in 1850 had 333,593,000 inhabitants, including 77,923,000 Bretons. The Kingdom of the Bretons has risen to the rank of leading world power.

Brazil remains an authoritarian monarchy. There is a certain democracy with the numerous parish councils in the countryside and corporatist councils in the cities which are elected. But they are only consultative even if the king's representatives (civil and religious) tend to follow their advice.

Jean VIII, however, was very active in architecture. He had many churches, monuments and castles built.
He built around 39 fantastic palaces in every possible style – Baroque, Gothic, Roman, Japanese, Indian, Islamic, Egyptian and even Mayan – in improbable places – islands, lake, mountains covered with pines or palm trees, rocky peaks…
These palaces are open to the people free of charge.
