In 1804 the Brazilians held only 500,000 of the 2,500,000 inhabitants of Morocco. The state of war is permanent and complicates the defense of Tangier, in fact the secondary capital of the Brazilian Empire.

Prince Jean decides on the total conquest of the country. 50,000 Brazilian soldiers are mobilized, assisted by 50,000 Spanish and Italian auxiliaries... as well as 3000 militarized priests. For Brazilians, religion is first and foremost the auxiliary of power, according to medieval concepts.

For two years, the Brazilians led a campaign of terror and scorched earth to break the population that resisted. Then they forcibly baptize the entire population, village by village. A member of the Sultan's family, captured, is even baptized and placed on the throne of a puppet Christian Moroccan kingdom.
The campaign caused the death of 500,000 people – mainly from famine; 300,000 others fled to Algeria or the Sahel.

Most Brazilians, who are very conservative, welcome this action worthy of the medieval crusades. But in Europe it shocks and this is the objective of Prince Jean who seeks to strengthen the reform camp in Europe – and therefore Napoleon – to prolong the conflict.

Because, from 1803, Prince Jean realized that Napoleon was out of control when the fragile peace with the United Kingdom was broken. Brazil is not taking any serious action. Spain continues to be neutral, a neutrality rather favorable to France.

But in 1806 France decided to impose the continental blockade. Spain refuses to apply it on the orders of Brazil, the English would not iron it out.
Napoleon, after successively defeating Austria, Prussia and Russia, decided to invade Spain in 1808. The Spanish army was quickly defeated and Napoleon placed his brother on the throne.

The old King Charles IV took refuge with his family in Tangier under Brazilian protection. He places all Spanish possessions under the protection of Brazil.

In Spain many refused the French conquest and rose up against them. Thus begins the Spanish War.
The Brazilians and the English will support the rebels in a bloody war. But Brazil sends few troops and does not hesitate to secretly betray its own forces so as not to weaken the French too much.
