The loss of India and Madagascar revives the old Southern Plan of 1691.

From 1764 Conan III sent a series of missions to the Southern Lands and the Pacific which crossed those of James Cook. In all, five missions descend as far south as possible and discover the Antarctic Peninsula, recognize the coasts of Conania, the islands of St Jean and St Marianne and a large number of Pacific islands up to the Guanabara Islands.

In 1767 Conan III began the colonization of the Pacific by founding Port Rohan. Then in 1771 it was the turn of Château Jean, in 1774 Baie Royale and in 1785 Port aux Perles.

Colonization was entirely and massively financed by the crown and entrusted to the navy. Soldier settlers and penal colonies were established there. Forts are built. Missionaries are responsible for converting the natives who are treated well if they do not resist. In Conania the Jesuit missions function poorly but among the Maoris (Ile Ste Jean), they succeed well.

In 1788 there were approximately 50,000 Brazilian settlers in the Pacific and 200,000 “protected” natives.
