In 1756 the English perceived the considerable risk posed by the alliance between France and Brazil. They set themselves the objective of eliminating the French danger in North America, driving the French and Brazilians out of India and Africa and containing Brazilian power in South America.

For this they can count on their Dutch and Argentinian allies for the war overseas. The Dutch are worried about the progress of Brazil and in particular their incursion into Africa.

The new Prince of Argentina Louis II Rohan thinks he can win over Brazil with his Prussian-trained army despite a disproportion of forces of one to three. He is counting on the English fleet, which he was promised, to counter that of Brazil.

In North America the advantage is with the English with up to 40,000 men available compared to 10,000 on the French side.

In South America the advantage is with the Brazilians with up to 180,000 men available compared to 60,000 on the Argentinian side.
In India the advantage goes to the Franco-Brazilians with 18,000 men compared to 10,000 on the Anglo-Dutch side.
In Africa the advantage is with the Dutch with 8000 men compared to 2000 on the Franco-Brazilian side.
At sea the advantage is with the Anglo-Dutch with 155 vessels against 105 on the Franco-Brazilian side.

Spain and Portugal remained out of the conflict except at the very end.
