When King Conan I died, Hercule Rohan was in Argentina. He still commands the troops of Patagonia, Paraguay and Charcas.
 
At the beginning of December 1698, the new king Conan II recalled him to Ste Marianne. It was then that he was the victim of an assassination attempt. The attack appears to have been organized by Conan II but was more likely the work of Dutch agents. The two men already hating each other, the attack ignites the powder.

Hercules accuses Conan II of the attack but also of having assassinated Conan I who planned to replace him. He demands his forfeiture.

Hercules is popular in his army and his power is quickly recognized, especially as Conan II increases his blunders by replacing all the senior executives of the kingdom with his friends who are often incompetent.

The civil war began in 1699 when Hercule Rohan marched to drive out Conan II. The latter suffered several defeats, he had to call the Prince of Baie, Jean Ier Le Fur (1662-1711), to his aid.

Hercule Rohan stumbles upon the fortifications of Peadra and Jean Le Fur pushes him back. Conan II, jealous of Jean Le Fur, will fire him and recall him several times. After six major battles, often won by Hercule Rohan, the war was inconclusive and the country found itself cut in two. The great wish of the Anglo-Dutch!
The civil war ended in 1703 when the belligerents were exhausted. Conan II is discredited. The great noble families, around twenty “Barons”, all linked to the royal family, took advantage of this to share power. Jean Le Fur strengthens the autonomy of his domain.
