The Brazilian crown has been heavily dependent on gold since the 1600s.

The annual production of gold (and also Diamonds in gold equivalent) per decade has been fairly stable, but from the 1660s the decline is marked:

- year 1600: 15.9 T
- year 1610: 19.9 T
- year 1620: 20.5 T
- year 1630: 19.2 T
- year 1640: 21.6 T
- year 1650: 17.3 T
- year 1660: 11 T
- year 1670: 6.9 T

Conan I must reduce military spending and dismiss a third of his army to bring it back to 20,000 h in 1670.

Raising taxes is tricky, especially since the shortage of gold leads to deflation that displeases the population.

Taking Potosi becomes a priority. Potosi extracts 100 T of silver per year, it is the equivalent of 240 kg of gold but it would allow the creation of a new currency and especially to remotivate the population and introduce new taxes.

On the Spanish side, the colonial power fortified its border with Brazil, particularly Cordoba, Santa Cruz, Charcas and Potosi. A permanent army of 10,000 men is installed in Upper Peru, around Charcas.

Since the previous war, negotiations have been carried out but the Spaniards are demanding a return to the borders of Tordesillas, which Brazil refuses. It claims the left bank of the Parana/Paraguay. But everyone knows that the real goal of the Brazilians is Potosi.
