During the 16th century Portugal increased its presence in Africa, especially in Southern Africa.
Angola and New Portugal receive the most settlers. In 1580, the Portuguese controlled 410,000 inhabitants in this region, including 210,000 whites and metis.
The Spaniards settled in Madagascar in 1525 and gradually conquered the island.
Spanish Madagascar has 453,000 inhabitants. in 1580 including 53,000 whites and metis.

In 1580, King Henry I of Portugal died childless. Theoretically the crown goes to King Philip II of Spain.
But a bastard descendant, Antoine de Portugal (1531-1595), proclaims himself king. Defeated in 1580, he had to flee on a Vinland ship.
Wulfnoth XII offers him his support and a fleet. But what interests the Vinlanders is the Portuguese colonies in Africa. From its bases in southern Vinland, the Vinlanders occupied Angola and southern Africa.
The Treaty of Porto (02 June 1584) confirms this division. Anthony of Portugal sees himself set up as king of New Portugal (capital Delagoa) but in fact becomes a vassal of Vinland.
The Vinlanders want to secure the route to India from the East and create a center of settlement in southern Africa in their strategy of world hegemony.
