In 1364 Portugal under the leadership of King Pedro I (1357-1367) embarked on the quest for the Road to India by the East.
From Madeira occupied in 1364, the Portuguese reached southern Africa in 1400 and the Indies in 1408. 1422 they are in China and reach Japan in 1429.

They settled in the Cape Verde Islands (1384), founded counters in Guinea, colonized the islands of the Gulf of Guinea (1393), new counters in Angola in 1398.

The following years were devoted to settling in Asia: Goa in 1414, Ceylon in 1428, Malacca in 1437, the Spice Islands from 1442. There the Portuguese came across Vinlanders and had to stop their progress.

From 1440 the Portuguese concentrated on southern Africa, particularly Angola, El Cabo (1452) and Delagoa (1463) by creating real settlements.
They also intervene on the eastern shore of Africa as far as Arabia and save the kingdom of Alodie from the Muslim invasion The Portuguese dream of a great empire that would go from Sudan to Cape Town. But they lack settlers given the small size of their country.

In 1500 Portuguese Southern Africa had 20,000 settlers, 7,000 metis and 40,000 natives/slaves.

Other Europeans, especially Spanish and French, trade with Africa but rarely south of the Equator.
