Description
What if the colonization of Vinland had succeeded?
Here is that story!------------------------
Map 13
-----------------------
Henry Crewkerne is too old for a distant adventure and it is his second son, Richard (22) who is going to Vinland. He arrived there in July 1218 and quickly found the Icelandic sailors who knew the southern route. The route is no longer a secret but no other sailor knows where to find the Middle Islands.
Richard tells them that he knows the king of León, Alfonso IX, and promises them a big reward. In fact Richard vaguely approached the king during the crusade against the Moors in Spain.
Richard left with the Icelanders who took him to the Middle Islands and then to La Coruña at the beginning of September 1218.
Richard ends up obtaining an audience with King Alfonso IX. He offers him the colonization of the Middle Islands to control the southern route. In exchange Richard is made Earl of the Middle Islands.
In May 1219 with the money of the king of Leon, Richard mobilizes 8 ships and 400 men. Initially, 200 settlers were planned, but Richard reduced this number to recruit 200 adventurers.
Because his plans have changed. He leaves 60 settlers on the island of Flowers at the end of May but leaves for Vinland at the beginning of June. His goal is simply to take Vinland.A navigation error took him further south to Normandite and he had to land at St Pierre on July 2, 1219.
The surprise effect being spoiled, Richard prefers to seize the castle of St Pierre the next day. Very quickly he eliminates the abbey administration and seizes all of Normandite in the name of the King of León.
The Second Vinland War begins.
