Description

What if the colonization of Vinland had succeeded?
Here is that story!

Abbot Robert de Beuvron will govern Vinland until his death in 1152, i.e. for 43 years. Isolated far from civilization, no one thinks of replacing him and he will not ask for his recall.

Its policy is prudent and effective. He establishes a tax system, enforces morality and Christian precepts, guarantees justice and ensures economic prosperity. He consolidates the Franco-Norman core by assimilating metis and Norois around St Laurent.

Hartoft remains Vinland's main port. The trade will only double in 40 years, the enormous distances hindering its profitability. The main customers remain in Greenland and Iceland, the products which go as far as Europe (mainly furs), represent 5% of the tonnage but 50% of the income.

The rigorous policy of the abbot displeases some, especially the English. Robert lets go of the recalcitrants, quite numerous, who will settle everywhere but especially in Kebec. These free settlers are 2040 in 1150.

On the same date, Vinland under the direct control of the abbey had 7,656 inhabitants: 20% Franco-Norman, 19% English, 23% Norse, 34% metis and 4% native. Over 40 years arrived 800 colonists, mostly Norse, and 800 native slaves.

In 1135 Robert launched the stone reconstruction of the abbey. The rustic church was completed in 1146. It is the oldest surviving European construction on the continent.
