What if the colonization of Vinland had succeeded?
Here is that story!------------------------
Map 2
-----------------------
Hartoft and its thirteen hamlets. The area occupied daily is in orange. The fairly regularly frequented area is light orange.
To the original 250 settlers, 340 other settlers were added in 22 years, mainly from Greenland and Island. Added to this are 540 slaves sold mainly by the Algonquins of Markland.
In 1094, there were 155 white households, 110 mixed-race households, 30 indigenous households, 40 single white men and 140 single indigenous men, making a total of 1670 inhabitants.
The Skrælings, natives of Vinland, numbered about 2,000 in Peninsular Vinland when Wulfnoth arrived. They have bad memories of previous colonization attempts.
39 days after the arrival of the Europeans, on September 5, 1072, they attack by surprise with 174 men on 58 canoes one of the fortified hamlets.
Wulfnoth had foreseen this situation and designed his hamlets as "lobster traps" - easy to get in, hard to get out of. The inhabitants locked in their fortified houses kill 43 assailants using bows and crossbows putting the others to flight.
Wulfnoth is magnanimous and heals 4 injured Skrælings captured. He trains interpreters and then releases them.
The following May, in 1073, the Skrælings came to make peace. The settlers will never be worried again.
