1072 - The Vinland of Wulfnoth Svenson

Wulfnoth Svenson (1031-1094) was an English lord from Yorkshire with Norwegian origins.

He was driven from his domain by the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066.

Exiled in Norway then in Denmark, he learns of the existence of Vinland and decides to conquer it.

n 1072 he settled in Vinland with 250 settlers.
To finance this adventure, he draws on the booty made during a raid in England in 1070.

He thought he could subjugate the natives of Vinland but it will be a failure, they would rather die than live as slaves.

It is undoubtedly his pride that led him to stay and lead the harsh life of a settler in such an isolated place.
