I've been referred to here from the discord chat in relation to standardising literature word counts throughout the group, as sometimes the word count requirements are not lining up with art requirements! I'll list what the discrepancies are, and I'll suggest a word count as well. Of course you don't have to use the word count I suggest, but I feel like if word counts are going to be stardardised, it's worth discussing it as well. I think standardising in general would help writers know what the requirement for a particular activity is rather than wondering exactly what the word count of THAT activity is.

I'm going to be listing all of the current word counts for activities. I know this is going to get long but bear with me! I can't add links right right now, need to go soon c: I got all the information from the official journals explaining each activity.

Art requirement of Fullbody and Coloured (no bg, no shading needed)

:bulletblack: Basic Training: 600 words
:bulletblack: Blindness Training 600 words
:bulletblack: Arena Training 300 words
:bulletblack: Side Quest RESULT 400 words
:bulletblack: Healing images 500 words

My suggestion: 400 or 500 words.

Art requirement of Fullbody, Coloured and Background (Coloured or shaded, sometimes)

:bulletblue: Hunting/Fishing/Scavenging 600 words
:bulletblue: Questing 1000 words
:bulletblue: SIDE Quest 600 words
:bulletblue: Careers 800 words
:bulletblue: Seasonal Brawl 1000 words
:bulletblue: Arena Battle Entries 800 words
:bulletblue: Races and Shows 1000 words
:bulletblue: Bonding 1000 words

My suggestion: 800 words

Road to Sol and Tributes are a special case because there's a wanting to do your best, but I'll list them here anyway

Tributes 1000 words
Road to Sol 1500 words

Alright, now that I've listed out every activity, I'd like to also take a moment to explain why I'm suggesting certain word counts for activities.

:bulletgreen: Why have I gone down in word count in general? For the Fullbody and Coloured requirement only section, this is for two reasons. Because to bring everything up higher would both feel terrible for Arena Training especially and it would bring it too close to the other level's requirement. A background easily doubles the time an artist takes (not always, but a background is always a fairly big undertaking in a picture) and the wordcount jump should reflect that.

For the Fullbody, Coloured with background level, it gets interesting. Half of these activities require 1000 words, so it's easy to think to move everything up there. But I don't think that would be healthy overall for the writing community here in Dracostryx. It isn't a secret that some writers already feel that comparative AP gains are already low (and that's another topic entirely that I will not be touching on beyond this). Knowing both community perception and the low participation of writers compared to artists in general, I don't feel the right thing to do is to rise it up to the highest level. ESPECIALLY when it is considered that Hunting/Fishing/Scavenging is one of the most popular activities in the game. Almost doubling the required word count would be harmful to writers who do this activity.

Rising that activity up to 800 words is a compromise of sorts: 600 words feels low for a lot of the activities in that section, and considering that the objective of this suggestion is to have a standard, I can't use this as an excuse to lower word counts and not raise others as appropriate. 600 words also edges a bit to close to the no background section of word counts, when the effort to draw a background is considered.

I have left Tributes in particular untouched in this because there's a general expectation that they are shaded. An extra 200 words for this activity feels fair.

Overall, I hope my suggestion and discussion here has helped, and if anyone wants to weigh in feel free! My opinion isn't the Law.

One thing I've suggested before to the team, but we've never really chatted over in detail is adjusting wordcount minimums based on the number of stryx present. With scavenging particular, one of the AP admins has mentioned that four stryxes in one 600 word scav image tend to not ever be able to get in enough mentions across all four in order for it to count, and one potential solution would be to have 600 words for 1 stryx doing an activity, with +100 words per additional stryx present.

I think players are also winded by the 1000 word minimum for quests and I personally wouldn't mind adjusting that at all to something a little lower, or have it be tiered like my above suggestion.

Also, smol thing that's not totally related but I wanna mention, art Tributes aren't required to be shaded. Flat colored tributes are fine, the journal just asks for colored full-bodies with BG. We'd actually even permit greyscale or monotone tributes. For most art activities, unless it says "colored AND shaded" assume that you can turn in something that is colored or something that's greyscale shaded. Examples of things as a Misc Admin that I'd pass as shaded would include these guys:
June Challenge
~The Serpent's Trap~
Good Catch!

Me and Shav actually had a small discussion based on this in the discord suggestion-discussion chat! If it's something the team wants to look at, it's there.

I personally don't fully agree with the sentiment in general—part of the effort to add more birds into a literature work involves balancing all the character's personalities and screen times off each other. I don't think that necessarily needs to be tied to the total word count, as the more characters you add the harder that becomes, especially for short pieces like you mentioned! There could be a note added for how much word count there should be of each stryx actively scavenging to be rolled. Players can always go above the minimum (I know! scary stuff LMAO) to reach the count. (lets say for example, each stryx needs about 150-200 words of them doing a thing? I'm not sure what to set this at, honestly)

The 1000 word count has put me off certain activities honestly. It feels a bit long for things like the monthly challenge, seasonal brawl and quests. That's why I went into a fair amount of detail as to why I suggested reducing it even though most of the Fullbody coloured with BG activites were set at 1000 words. This is my experience as a player, I'd be more likely to decide to write certain activites if the word counts felt more fair against the others: why bother doing a quest literature when I can nearly get two scavs for the same "price"

Maybe it's just the community expectation, but with the level my art's at (decent-good-ish god I don't want to inflate my ego too hard lol) I've always felt like I NEEDED to shade it or it would get dinged for not trying hard enough. I say this because my shading is quite detailed, especially in fully painted pieces, so the quality jump is quite noticeable.

You saying a greyscale tribute could be accepted makes me want to try it just to be different lmao

I think there were a few journals that said Coloured or Shaded and a few that only mentioned colour, but I lumped them together into one category for ease of understanding.

Hopefully that covers everything, and thanks for the feedback c: Hopefully it'll all be looked over soon!

support listed, haha!

No reason why Road to Sol should be one and a half times more lengthy than a Tribute of all things! :,)

ooone big mechanical note, however! Questing and Scavenging/Hunting/Fishing are not equivalent. Questing entries require having a rider, for S/H/F it's entirely optional! All you need is the one Stryx.

I would keep S/H/F as 600 words.
GlacialFalls Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2019  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well, I'd decided to not mention RtS in great detail because it's an event, and adjusting things like word counts in the middle of one is interesting at best. I do agree, it would be nice if effort-based events like this one in the future were 1000 words or so.

I was aware of the rider difference, but thanks for pointing it out regardless c: I'm coming from the angle that adding a rider to the story comes with its own effort not attached to the word count, per se. The writer needs to balance the rider, their personality, their interactions with the stryx and the environment without making the story overwhelmingly about one or the other. I personally think that is equivalent enough to drawing in the rider in an artwork entry.

I know increasing the word count for hunt/fish/scav doesn't mechanically feel nice, but I was going off my own personal experience that it felt a bit too easy to write a 600 word piece with 3 birds in it compared to drawing the same scene. I totally understand if you don't agree with me on that though—other opinions are welcomed! One of my goals with the suggestion was squishing the requirements down to as few categories as possible.

thanks for the feedback c: Hopefully it's all taken into account when this is looked at!

I´d be cool if the featured folder could be updated every now and then :) I really like looking at the outstanding work of the community and it´s a huge motivation for me personally to try my best and get featured and I´m sure it´s very motivational for others too. Currently it´s pretty much dead tho.

I understand there´s a lot else going on , it´s just a small idea that might be easy to implement c:

I'd really like, sort of a sawn type of Stryx? slightly bigger than a Harpia but still smaller than a Gryph. they may not be the best at racing, when they come out, but can be used greatly for fishing, scavenging and shows, when they too come out.

Just a bit feedback about the seasonal bonus, it would help if the description of what counts and what doesn´t would be a bit clearer. For instance for the summer season it says "Summer appropriate backgrounds" which people may interpret differently.

Being from Texas it was cracked grounds and dried out landscapes for me, whereas counting admins want butterflies and lush green hills. Maybe I just didn´t see the description though but it´d be cool to know the specifics of the bonus :)

While out scavenging your stryx found a pirate's map! Follow it to find buried treasure! Draw your stryx with its rider digging up treasure or searching for where X marks the spot.  Must be fullbody with background and shading. Writing is the standard 1,000+ words. Rewards can be rare gemstones, baubles, and metals with a rare chance of stryx armor and even breath stones or at least the items needed to craft them.

My suggestion is, an event of another kind of dragon roaring through the region.

Thus, participating players would have to make a drawing or a writing of at least 900 words or more, as well as the unpleasant encounter with this species.
Then, the player receives rewards in a good amount if the battle is successful or a constant amount of Baubles + some fighting injuries if the battle is lost.

Stryx Artist Training Grounds. Daily challenges, in the spirit of Artist Training Ground, starting from something as simple as "Draw your Stryx standing". I'd like to see these give daily rewards, like +2AP (you draw daily, after all), and maybe something REALLY special upon completing ALL of it. Perhaps a half-way-through prize, too.

The problem with AP: quantity> quality. Some of the Ap sheets out there are in my opinion seriously lacking effort and are all about getting as much Ap as fast as possible. Sometimes they don´t even fulfill the minimum requirement and still get full points which is just very discouraging.
However I understand that it´s impossible to check all AP sheets and/or tell an artist to 'draw better'. That´s why tackling it the other direction would be better:

The idea: As seen in other groups - 'painted AP bonus'. (I  wouldn´t be suprised if somebody brought up this idea before). AP that are painted (no lineart, no flat colors, cell shading, no 'sheets' but single pieces etc.) get an extra AP bonus of i.e. 5Ap. Since painting is very time consuming few artists chose to do it for ap because it simply would take them ages to get anywhere in the game. Also this bonus might encoruage younger artists to try it out and give a chance.

Of course the bonus would need clear rules on requirements and such and not every artist can profit from it. But that´s also kind of the point-  giving more experienced artists a bit of a helping hand and balacing quantity vs quality :)
Also I`m not trying to bash anybody

I´d just love doing this Daelith and Gwaine - Hunting by Aerophoinix more often compared to this Lethal Night by Aerophoinix
GryAdventures Featured By Owner Edited Mar 25, 2017  Professional Digital Artist
As a relatively experienced artist, I will have to come and say that this method of "painted bonus" has huge unfair points in it. The way you say it gives off the impression that somehow line art, flat coloring and cell shading takes less time to make than painted, which is not true. In fact over these 16 years of being a digital artist, my experience is that you can make painted work as effortless and quality lacking as artworks including line art if you make it so. This is purely about the motivation of artist in question and what are they priorities and patience when doing art, not so much of the style they go with.

But I do in fact agree with you completely about AP sheets. I think the main problem is a huge amount of art that people are made to do and when they are forced to do an insane amount of art, the quality starts to drop.

Some linearted art of mine:
Eat me alive - BTT3
High price to pay - BTT3
And I did not even need you this time - BTT2

And painted ones:
Ice 'em!
Iron Authority - HCT

all of them took as much time and effort to do. some of the lined ones even more.
Aerophoinix Featured By Owner Mar 25, 2017   General Artist
You´re right, the way I made it sound was that painted style is more time-consuming/complex than others which as you prooved isn´t the case. So it would be necessary to find a judging system that benefits all time-consuming/high-quality art. Which in return requires judges who spend a lot of time looking at art.

Going the other way around, telling (some) artists to step up their game on the other hand is difficult too. Since it´s hard to tell if the artist is lacking effort or just experience. Do you have any ideas if i may ask? :)

I think it would be nice if there was in the desciption box of the items a small explanation about what it is used for! For instance in the new monthly challenge there is the "hay bedding" item that I have never seen before, and by reflex I clicked on the picture expecting to find some kind of informations about that in the description, but there's only the copyrights in it. Thought it would be great because it has happened to me several times already to expect finding infos there :')

I had an idea to maybe make the survivalist job a bit more fun and exciting:
Right now hunting/fishing only gives meat/fish, which is nice for crafting but that's all. Scavenging at least has a chance to give and egg which is great but I think we could add some more.
My idea was to add rare and very rare objects that have a small percentage of chances to appear, which could be sold or kept to be used as trophies.

Example : I send my stryx to catch some fish, but he brings back from the sea a weirdly shaped stone, which when looking closely ressembles the bust of a statue. And after many fishing entries I end up finding the three parts of the statue, which is finally complete! That could give us an Atlantis trophy, pretty much like the Will-o-the-Wisp one!

That's just an idea, there could be so much more things to do, and many rare objects to find during hunts and scavenging etc! That would definitely make the survivalist job more exciting!

I feel like the written AP Needs some rebalancing. As it stands right now from a set of 3 written breeder approvals would come to 15 AP if you hit the 1000 word minimum(correct me if I'm wrong), which is at roughly the same amount you get for 1 portion of the breeder application(this is just from briefly glancing around mind you).
1AP For every 200 words is fine for short sketches posted alongside drawings but for people like myself who would prefer to focus on written stuff to build up my kids it's kind of unfair. It would be nice if there was AP multipliers or something like that for more longform 800+ or so word only entries. so that way writers don't have to crank out whole novels to get the same amount of AP as a person doing a handful of headshots.
This probably came across as whineier than intended whoops ewe;;;

About Jobs:
How about allowing the players to change jobs from time to time? I thought maybe we could be allowed a change of job after keeping the same one at least six months.

The problem with the current system is it can lead to boredom. I haven't chosen a job yet because as it is now I know I won't be able to change if I get bored so I don't dare to choose any of them (especially with the new Arena-related job, I'd have to try the Arena first). I was interested in the Survivalist Career but I feel like I would quickly get bored of finding items and craft them all over again. The Breeder has its perks but it's far from being the most fun. Rookery Master and Trader really don't seem interesting at all compared to the others, etc.

These problems could be avoided with this new system, and it would definitely bring some more fun to the game!

A breeding item that would give a small chance of an offspring developing a random breath ability? Like, use in a breeding for a 1-10 chance of getting a random breath ability. Would be neat and would prevent people from inbreeding to get breath abilities in the future, and its a way for those who weren't here/weren't old enough to get them when they were released.

Some more words:

I actually don't have a great explanation here, but like, more mammalian stryx might be cool in the future, and opens the door for adorable things like stryx species based on gliding mammals. I mean, since runners are upcoming and flightless, gliders aren't quite impossible, right? 0:

I just realized yesterday that I totally forgot to save all my hunting/scavenging claims. (could someone possibly link me the ones from autumn/summer? orz)
While that I had the thought, that, if different admins roll different entries, it would be easy to simply re-use an image to roll for loot. The admins (and sometimes silly people like me) cant keep track of the images, right?
maybe the group could invent something like the activity trackers in the Kukuri-arpg? In that, the admins replies with the image used and the rolled loot on a journal, thus the images are listed and they know which ones have been used.

An idea how to encourage artists to work even harder: How about making a special folder with the best and most outstanding stryx art. Every piece of art that is admitted gets awarded with maybe 3-5 AP or something. Pictures would be voted on.

I just noticed that many people draw art mostly for AP, and while it´s good art and perfectly ok  this system encourages quick and fast art and discourages time-consuming high quality art (of course not generally speaking). So introducing something like an award for great art would be beneficial to all.

Plus it would be even easier to browse through outstanding art :)
Northern-Malagon Featured By Owner Jan 3, 2017
I dont know if this would be that grand of an idea simply for one thing. That would be playing to peoples skill levels, and not every one is on the same level of skills, so those bonus AP would mostly be stuck to those who can take the time, or have the skill to do that high quality art that most every one would vote for. That would leave out new artists, and in the end, I could see it greatly discouraging those new or younger artists.
Aerophoinix Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2017   General Artist
I get your point, it would have to be handled carefully. But if it had the status of a Daily Deviation for example it would be fine. No artist gets discourage because they dont get a DD simple because it is so special. And for new artist it would be a long-term goal to get there.
Northern-Malagon Featured By Owner Jan 16, 2017
Ehh, its very different from DD though, most dont really care about it, but DD's are not rewarded with currency or rewards, instead are just featured, which I believe this group already has a featured art folder.
Aerophoinix Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2017   General Artist
There is a freatured art folder, however it doesn´t appear to be used a lot. It´d just be cool to shift the balance from drawing as much AP as possible, to drawing and illustrating you Stryx as good as possible :)
Northern-Malagon Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2017
That is true, but that should really be done in the form of just making less quality art maybe valued a bit less over all, and not just voted on.
Aerophoinix Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2017   General Artist
But then you would discourage newbie artists who can´t yet draw all that well. I think we can agree that it´s better to encourage good work than discourage 'poor' work. So maybe a different approach of encouraging good work would be the way to go.
Northern-Malagon Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2017
Well no that would be compared to each artists average. Like, you look at the artists profile, see their art and if this piece shows effort and lots of work compared to the rest, the a bonus would be applied. This exact thing is happening in another arpg and it works really well so far from what I see!

OK so a few things (please don't hate me for these i am just trying to help / make things fair).

1. Advent -  In seems like writers are always being discouraged and limited more than other artist. In the Avent raffles they have to put a min of 5AP in while drawings are 3AP. It seems unfair to be putting in the more AP for the same chance to win the prize. Especially when that AP will most likely than not go to someone else. (i have no problem with others using that art for AP I just find it unfair that writers have to give more). Also haveing to have a rider limits what you can do :/

2. FAQ - Add frequently asked questions to the FAQ journal itself. There are so many questions that are asked again and again that it makes sense to answer them in the journal itself where people can quickly find them. Things like 'what qualifies as a rider' 'can a stryx have more than one companion eg a bat and a spider' 'can two stryx have the same rider'

3. survivalist job -  I have a bit of a problem with the survivalist job rewards, you can get the exact same rewards by just putting a bat companion on your stryx which seems very unfair. It really devalues being a survivalist. Could there be a reward added that is not also given by an item / companion or added items / companions that give the advantage of others jobs like an extra breeding slot / high changes of markings being passed on. or anther idea i had was to merge the survivalist and trade jobs / rewards to that at least survivalist get more for what they find or maybe make it so survivalist birds bring back something every time regardless of it they are ascended or not.
p.s I realised there are breeding items being added so sorry if i am suggesting something that is already being implemented and i am assuming that bats and stuff do not added up to 10% better odds of rear items for survivors. I've never seen or heard that this is so but please correct me if i am wrong about that ^__^

4. Questions - I've had it happen to me a few times and alot of other people i talk to have too that questions get skipped or not answered. It always feels like a personal slight though i know it's most likely just someone not knowing the answer and leaving it for someone else to answer and then the next person does the same and so it never gets answered. Even a 'i don't know this person might' and tagging someone who would is better than feeling like your being slighted / ignored. or when people ask if this thing is ok with their design telling them to put it in and they will see.

I have a few suggestions! ;v;

:bulletblue: With the advents and or other competitions-
Perhaps give people who lose a compensating reward? For example, A lot of people have entered in the advents and all their entries will be counted as AP for the winner so the people who lose basically give free art away. It would be nice for them to get perhaps 200-400 baubles or something similar. That would give people a reward for at least putting an entry in and might even persuade some members to enter for the bauble reward too.

:bulletblue: Also with the advent stryx, it seems a couple of things might be off on design but if you give them a badge or something saying 'this is a special stryx so the markings might be different than in the guides' Like the banding on the second advent, originally a dark gene but with a small sticker saying that its a special advent stryx, everything is fine because then it has a reason to be special, it also makes those stryx feel more like an accomplishment to have. They would be recognised as special with their unique little award. ;v;

:bulletblue: Perhaps revise the option for stains to have all the colours of the colour modifiers (olive, canary and jay). It already has the option for cardinal stains without having cardinal and it feels a bit unbalanced that an uncommon mark being cardinal is the only one who really has no purpose on a stryx with stains because red stains is already a common thing.

:bulletblue: Also with stains, could it be possible to review the ability to have a different marking coverage if all three edge markings are present (stains/ink/ tips) It's hard to fit these three genes onto one bird but if the range could be improved (only when all three are present) then it would make things a lot easier.
I asked this before and were ignored twice-…… I don't even mind if its a no, i would just like an answer ;v;

:bulletblue: If possible could the breeding percentages be reviewed? The pass rate of common marks is extremely low and personally, its put me off breeding and stryx because the breeding is just so bad. I have bred two stryx which between them had 13 passable markings on numerous occasions and have come out with 0-3 mark clutches.
It feels like what's the point in breeding if you will never achieve anything near equal or above what you are already breeding and the low mark stryx can never be moved bar putting them in the loft and I feel bad for then filling the loft up.

All of these, especially the breeding. I finally got more into Stryx after being in the group for over a year and I'm extremely put off from the breeding. 5-8 marked stryx should guarantee at least 4 marks. None of this 0-2 mark crap.

First, thank you so much for suggesting that participants in the Advent contests get a consolation prize if they don't win. You're awesome!

For Stains, I think allowing them to be any saturated color would be awesome. I myself pretty much always use saturated red Stains, because it's one of the only ways to get more color on a stryx with a common marking.

And yeah, it's super depressing the way markings are passed right now. I can understand rare genes not passing easily, but common genes should have 50% pass rate. 'Cause ... ya know ... they're supposed to be common. :|

At least the new changes to the uncommon base color modifiers make it a bit easier to get a colorful bird.

Thank you so much for thanking me <3 it's wonderful to now that my contribution is appreciated ;v;

For the colour of stains, it would be good if they changed the red stains to a saturated one so cardinal would still have an effect on it but there are already a lot of stryx with bright red stains now :C

They could possibly allow for cardinal to have more shades in the slider, perhaps pink or more purple?

I feel the pass rate on commons should at least be 45-60 at max
they are common so they should be seen commonly and they aren't, its so sad when breeding

With the new changes to the uncommon color-modifiers being able to change the base coat even with just one copy of the gene I'd still like to have birds with Cardinal. But it is definitely unbalanced right now.

Yes to all of these
Especially breeding since it's it's all that' really worth doing right now (and barely with the state of the market)
