Description

NML Cygni is the largest star discovered to date with a radius 1,650 times that of our sun. if it were placed at the center of our solar system, its outer surface would extend further than the orbit of jupiter, filling over half the gap between jupiter and saturn's orbits. it is also one the most luminous, cool hyper-giant stars known. this star losses about 200 earth masses of material every year from its outer surface, which creates two distinct shells of gas and dust around the star travelling at roughly 20km every second. despite the star's enormous size, it does not gravitationally dominate its stellar neighbourhood because of its mass of only 25-40 solar masses and its unique position in the galaxy.
