Description

-gliese 581g, is the most earth like exoplanet ever discovered in terms of its mass, radius, gravity, place in its system and many more. it has been given the unofficial name, zarmina, named after its discoverer's wife. it is the fourth planet out from its star, gliese 581, and sits comfortably in the habitable zone. the star is a red dwarf, one of the most common types of stars in our galaxy. the star is only 20.5 light years from earth, putting the system on our metaphorical doorstep. it is also the closest system know to have a planet orbiting in the habitable zone of its star. the planet however, orbits only at 0.15 au from its star with a year of only 36.5 earth days! but because the star is a red dwarf with only a third the mass and luminosity of our sun, the star's habitable zone is brought much closer to it, placing planet g in the perfect place right in the center of it. also, due to the planet's short distance from it's star, the star would appear as a huge red ball in the planet's sky about 5-10 times larger than the sun is in ours! the star would also bathe the planet in a reddish glow, along with all other planet's in the system.

-because of the planet's close proximity to its star, the planet is said to be tidally looked to it, meaning only one side ever faces the star, while the other faces away. if this is the case, the side facing the star would be searing hot while the side facing away would be freezing cold. there would be a thin area of habitability around the planet's terminator, which is the line that seperates night from day. here the star would constantly sit on the planet's horizon and supply the right amount of light and heat for life to exist in this thin strip of habitability. this would result in an "eyeball" appearance on the planet, or as some scientists have called, an "eyeball earth".
-but that is not the case because the planet's large mass and slightly higher gravity is enough to hold a denser-than-earth atmosphere to its surface. so even if the planet were to be tidally looked, the dense atmosphere would circulate the heat around the planet and keep the global temperature comfortable for life, making the entire planet habitable, which is the most likely case.

-then there is the scenario where the planet may not be tidally looked and instead rotates. this obviously makes the entire planet's surface habitable except for the poles, which would be colder. but in my opinion, if the planet does rotate, it would probably be very slowely over a period of a good few days on earth. if the planet does have an axial tilt, it would probably be very low as well, due to the slow rotation period.
- it is unlikely that the planet rotates quickly, but if it does, it may also have a significant tilt as well. this tilt would result in seasons on the planet, just like those on earth. however, the catch is that each one would only last for about 9 earth days! or only a tenth as long as the 3-month long seasons here on earth. this would result in extremely varied, unpredictable and quick-changing weather on the planet. but again, this is vary unlikely as the planet's large mass and radius would slow down its rotation period to a more stable one and as a result, decrease its axial tilt as well.

-even after all these scenarios, the planet would still be easily habitable though. just showing you how easy it is for life to take hold, even in the harshest conditions!

-the system itself is about 7-11 billion years old, which is alot older than ours at only 4.5 billion years old! this is because of the very long life span of red dwarfs which burn fuel much slower than normal stars like our sun. as a result, any life on the planet, would of had more than enough time to take hold and evolve! and if so, the dominant species on the planet would have definately evolved into a super or even hyper-advanced race of intelligent beings! these beings would most likely be ahead of our current technology by at least 2 billion years! thats definately enough to say that they've established space travel to other systems with great speed, and use of little resources! they could already be colonising and exploring other worlds as far as the other side of the galaxy or even other galaxies! whats not to say that they've already visited earth multiple times to examine our species, culture, technology and planet? but if they have visited us before and had the intention of destroying us, they would have done it long ago! for all we know they may have visited us before, thousands of years ago and assisted us with our developement and technology.
so the logical answer here it that if they exist, they are friendly, otherwise they would have gotten rid of us long ago! the planet's atmosphere may also have a similar composition as ours. the alien species would probably also bear resemblance to we humans. the atmosphere may also have a high level of carbon dioxide in it due to industrialisation, or it could have been put there purposely by the species to allow for a temperature rise to make the planet even more habitable.

-the alien species on this planet would have most likely already discovered elements not seen or manufactured on earth. elements with much higher atomic masses than those we know of, but still stable under normal conditions. these new elements may also have properties very useful for manufacture, space travel, commercial purposes and many more. the alien species is probably so advanced that they can create any element they want with the desired properties and uses! can you imaging an element used in infrastructure thats just as strong or stronger than maybe even diamond?! or super fluids at normal temperatures instead of at absolute-zero?! there technology may be so advanced that even our world's top minds would have trouble just trying to understand it!

-to explain the planet's very large mass of 3-4 earth masses and 1-2 earth radii, but only 1-1.5 earth gravity, it is possible that the planet could be made up of elements lighter than those found more commonly in the earth.
-or the core may be small, but made up of super-heavy elements not commonly found on earth along with the heavy metals abundant on earth. resulting in lower gravity at the surface but much higher gravity at the core.

-the planet has a large mass, so logic dictates that it should have at least one average-sized moon, or many smaller moons. but because the system is compact, and the planets are relatively large and orbit close to each other, their gravitational interactions with each other may disrupt the orbit of a large moon around the planet and cause it to be lost. but i'm not too sure if the gravity of the other planets really effects it or not. so it is hard for me to make a definate conclusion about any large moons. however, the planet may have some asteroid moons at least. but then there is the possibility that most asteroids in the system could had been cleared out long ago. so there really isn't a definate answer for the planet having any moons.

despite gliese 581 being one of the closest stars to our sun, it is practically invisible to the naked eye! again because the star is a red dwarf and puts out very little luminosity. but the sun would be an easily visible star in the southern hemisphere of the planet. we are viewing the planet from about an angle of 20° north of the equator. from the planet, the sun would appear as part of the constellation of taurus, at the end of one of its "legs". it is the bright yellow star at the bottom of the chain of three stars between the thrusters. the other two stars in the chain are part of the rest of the "leg". aldebaran is another star in the constellation of taurus and is seen as the red star near the top left of the planet. orion, one of the most famous and easily recognizable constellations in the sky, would appear greatly unchanged! it too, would appear as a constellation in the planet's southern hemisphere. it is seen to the far left of the planet. the stars shown in it are the ones that make up its basic shape: betelgeuse, heka, bellatrix, mintaka, alnilam, alnitak and rigel. saiph would just be off to the left, currently out of view. the famous pleiades/ seven sisters star cluster is seen to the top of the right of the planet.

other stars shown that would appear in the planet's southern hemisphere:

- sirius. near the bottom left of the planet
- cursa. yellowish star between rigel and sirius.
- procyon. bright star near the top left of the planet.
- toliman/ rigel kentaurus/ alpha centauri. bright yellow star to the bottom right of the planet.
- menkar. reddish star bellow the twin thrusters.
- sheratan AB. bright star to the far right of image.
- hamal. star to the top left of sheratan.

other interesting stars not shown include: capella AB, arcturus and vega which would appear as very bright stars in the planet's northern hemisphere. there would also be canopus in the southern hemisphere, another very bright star. there are many other bright stars around the system, but those four would be the brightest.

gliese 581g is probably the most habitable world known to humans. it is even more capable of supporting life than earth. if it really does exist and i say it does, i'm really hoping to see it and the alien species that lives on it!

i'm back people!:D and i've brought with me this wonderful picture of planet gliese 581g, in my depiction of it, which i think is quite accurate!:)

i was inspired by the movie battle ship to make this! it really wasn't a bad movie. good acting, awesome graphics, lots of action and entertaining enough to keep you glued to your seat! however, what really didn't stick with me was the plot involving the aliens. i mean, we signal them, they come about a day later and just start attacking everything they see as a threat to them and their operations. the humans didn't even try to communicate with them or ask them why they came!? and then we just started attacking them?! but in truth, we did kinda attack them first though. so maybe they were merely trying to defend themselves. the reason why they came to earth wasn't really clear in the movie, but it looked like they were studying the planet and maybe even try to signal back there world so they could start colonising earth. what pissed me off though is the fact that they could travel 20 light years in a single day, but the only weapons they had were grenade-like energy catriges and gyroscopic robotic orbs! they didn't even have any energy based weapons or guns or something?! but what if they didn't intentionally bring energy weapons to ensure that nothing serious happened to the planet? maybe they were planning to live along side us, probably in our oceans maybe? because if you look at the images of the planet they showed in the movie, you could see lights in the oceans.

so back to the image. yes, i put an alien race on the planet because i'm 99% sure that if the planet does exist, there would be an advanced race given the system's age and planet's habitability!:o it's "unethical" to include an unconfirmed alien race on an unconfirmed exoplanet, but i feel that i would be insulting the world if it does exist by not including one!:( that aside, i really enjoyed making this one!:)
i wanted to include a moon in the background, but couldn't because of the angle. no biggy though, still came out awesome!:D

this is also the first image where most of my time spent working on the planet's texture!:o i spent alot of time working the continents, islands and coast. i worked on the coast to make it look as natural as possible! infact, in terms of realism, its probably my most realistic planet yet!;) won't you agree?!:D its also my most massive image as well, 10,000px X 5,000px! the planet itself is about 4,000px across in this image, and the texture was created in 16bit!:o thats huge resolution for much higher image quality, and also saved as a png too for even more detail!:D so go on download and explore it, but i have to apologise for the long download time, huge file size!^^;
made the image in photoshop along with the planet's texture. the position of the stars were taken using celestia. its a quite useful space exploration program!:)

all comments and critiques are welcome on this one. i really want to get to know what you think about the image!:) do you guys think this should also be a print? i'm not sure if you'd like it or not. please comment on what you think.:) and as always, enjoy the artwork!;)

I love this planet. I hope we'll get to know more about it one day. Is the gravity there slightly higher or slightly lower?

thanks and i'm glad you like it.:D
well, on the topic of gravity, it all depends on the planet's radius and density. if the density is high, so to the gravity and vice versa. because we only know of the planet's mass, it really isn't possible to determine its other physical properties like density, radius or gravity. for the moment, we can only assume that the planet is rocky in composition like earth and so may have a gravity 1.5 times that of earth. hope this clarifies things a bit!:)

I see. So we'd bearly notice the difference, right?
it would be pretty cool if the gravity was just slightly lower...then it would be like Pandora from Avatar

thank you!

Wow awesome!!! This the most fave planet ever found... I only know that it can be found in the goldilocks zone yet i dont where that is.  If only i could make spaceship and explore that region ( yet it take light years away from our planet)  Very Nice artwork and thank you for writing the Descriptions :D

Good Alien Species Candidates are:

- Saiyans from Dragonball ( A gravity much stronger than earth would make evolve the creatures , possessing super human strength and having human qualities )

- Protoss from Starcraft ( A super intelligent and highly advance beings would make the creatures evolve like them)

- Necrofriggians from Ben 10 ( I remember Big Chill's planet resembling like gliese 581g , having half one hot and the other half cold )

- Or maybe a mix of this trio...

I only hate the fact that they find habitable planets for there own sake , not knowing that there are inhabitants in there ( I remember the movie " Starship Troopers"). I mean we should be more concern of our planet... Maintaning its beauty and making it peaceful to live!!! coz this our home , the place where we are born... and its the only Earth.

LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!!! XD

Your enthusiasm and obvious love for the subject matter clearly shines through in every image and particularly in your descriptions. Unadulterated love, joy and excitement at the endless possibilities of space. Though I can't argue the accuracy of your statements, I can nonetheless compare it to a good university lecture: when a professor is there who loves his job, genuinely finds his research exciting and enjoys talking about it, he easily has the attention of everyone in the room and his enthusiasm seeps into everyone present. Your work here clearly demonstrates that the role of the artist is just as important as that of the researcher. It is work like this that can act as the inspiration for a whole new generation of scientists to look to the stars.
