A few weekends ago I was drawing new things and I came up with the bottom drawing - a cave girl doing a little reading. I fiddled around with her feet a bit, and finally came to something I liked. This was way to messy to use, but I liked how it felt, and at the very end I added a little lantern, which made it feel cozy. I had no idea how to suspend it, so I left it hanging, much like the rest of the drawing.

Then a few days later I was requested to draw an invitation for a dinner here at Dream Works. I recalled the sketch I'd just done, and decided to try do a more finished version. I'd try and make the girl look just a little more like the character in our film. I just free-handed the drawing again as best I could. This second drawing is on the top. I could never make my cave girl look like the one in the film, but I shortened her legs as much as I dared and did my best to get her as close as I could on the short deadline. I changed her book into a menu and added a rough little sloth to hold the lantern.

This is absolutely wonderful, just so charming and whimsical, plus, I really REALLY love the mastodon/mammoth she's lounging on. In fact, I loved all those elephant creatures in your film, especially the adorable little mousephants :3

I really wish Dreamworks had stuck with your original design and not altered her to make her so... dreamworksy.

Both versions have certain charm to them -- the line art and concept of the first is lovely, and I like the shorter legs, whereas the bottom sketch feels more inviting to me... and I love the rough lines. Beautiful work overall, as always! :aww:

Interesting idea. Using the trunk as a lounge and the... creature holding up the lantern is fun.
Reminds me of the movie, Croods

This is going to be a nitpick from me the ankle on one of the feet seems a bit tiny compared to the other. Other than that, I like the piece.

I kind of prefer the rough sketch (bottom one) because of the "feel" of the picture...

But after reading your description; I can totally see where you're going with the finished piece. :)
So it's a lot more appropriate to the occasion. =3

Oddly, I like the first one you did more, I like the pose more and the closed eyes and I also like the roughness of the drawing, but I do like the sloth up top soo.... yeah. I like both =) Love the linework.

I wish, honestly, there was a book you wrote (drawn) to teach average joes like me to draw females with the proportions of yours.
They're so beautiful, graceful and outright delicious.

You have my complete admiration.
