Self-Supporting by alltelleringet Self-Supporting by alltelleringet
This is an idea I've been carrying with me for a long time. I find the structural properties of an arch interesting, where each part is supporting the other. If you remove one, it will all collapse but as long as the structure is untouched it will remain strong. Shot in Bohemian Switzerland in Czech Republic October 2016. The houses are photographed in Prague and Stockholm. The photo was ready already in May but I wanted to wait and post it in the right season.

So, what is the first thing that comes to your mind when you see it? Share your thoughts!

What a bizarre, whimsical idea. I agree with harunist - this would make a fun concept for a movie.

I love it. It was a great idea and very well executed. You did a great job putting it all together into a piece that flows nicely together. Great work!

For some reason I could easily imagine a Wes Anderson movie centred around this concept. It looks fantastic!

I like the stairs leading up to it. They're a normal set of stairs leading to a not-so-normal community where it feels anything is possible. Where beauty and structure meet creativity and a semi-possible underlying danger.

The only things I can think about are what kinds of people would live there, and why they might have needed to build their houses this way. It's a very thought-provoking picture that way, bringing a lot of imagination with it.

It would work as long as the houses were solid, otherwise they could not transfer the stresses down to the stone pillars. If it were built that way but with the houses just facades on top of a supporting structure then it would work but it would not be 'real'.

I see another structure in my mind where houses have fallen through a rotten and failing wooden supporting structure and the houses are only held in place by their own position jutted up to and leaning onto one another. It wouldn't last long but with shoring and strengthening it might continue to stand.
