Cut and Fold

I figured that the dotted line on a road and the dotted line in magazines (where you're suppose to cut something out) could be combined. I shot it in June 2012, but I've just been working with it for a few weeks. I've been staring myself blind on it now and would appreciate your comments! Room for improvements? Good/Bad?

What comes to your mind when you see it? What's the story behind?

Great concept and execution, this image grabs your attention in multiple ways: first it makes a great impression when viewed as a smaller preview because the concept is startling but clear with good contrast and composition; next there's lots of details to keep your eye moving in the full-view image, such as the opposing biker and scissors, upside-down tree, and are those panicked birds or debris being flung from the upheaval?; and upon further observation you may notice that the artist has included more subtle features that make you wonder - are the shadows over the biker from an approaching storm? are there farmhouses nearby that will be affected? are those other fields just starting to peel too? etc.
A couple things that distracted me - but only upon looking at the image most critically - were that the grass has a "clone tool" look when closely examined, and I wish the bird/debris were a little more obvious. But both of these things may be the way they are on purpose, so take that with a grain of salt.
Synopsis: I think this is a very fun image that is visually and mentally entertaining! It shows that the artist obviously has amazing photo manipulation technique and originality.

It's always pleasing to see someone taking a concept and turning it into a "reality". It is a simple idea & executed well. Only two things that may help you, I found the curve of the left flap, (with the upside down tree) a little awkward, also, I can see you have attempted to introduce some debris tumbling from the flaps, as if to give a sense of movement, but in the scale of the picture, it is lost. Perhaps you could do something to make it more obvious? Well done, I can Imagine this on a large advertising hoarding by the roadside.

Really great concept. Very powerful message without the use of words and some of the tiny details are very good. Lovely photo to have taken and manipulated as well. Lighting is great. There are a few things that seem questionable to me, though.

I am not sure what the other cracks in the background are. Are they also the sort of "cut dotted lines" that you are going for with the main road? They appear just a little awkward in comparison to how soft and smooth the rest of the image is. Also, I do see the scissors there, but they seem to have just been plastered into the rest of the picture. I would perhaps add just a little bit of shadow like there is on the bike to make it seem as if the scissors are actually a part of the scene more.

Overall though, I do love the image. Very eye stopping at first glance and overall a joy to look at!

I believe the scissors are supposed to be painted onto the road exactly like the dotted lines are and I think he did that pretty well.

Okay, first of all I must say this is a great deviation. It really hits the eye and the concept is amazing so I gave vision a full 5. The technique is also awesome but on browsing I found a few more with the same technique, however the cut line was well thought of. Hence the double 4's on technique and originality. Also as a few others mentioned the shadows could be a little lighter and a few details would have looked lovely on the road (the tree was a fantastic touch, though) and some more vehicles would also have been awesome. Hence the 4 on impact.
Oh, and I also believe that many of us would want to learn to do that particular kind of photomanipulation, especially from someone this good, so it would be amazing for you to put up a tutorial on how to do it. Thanks for reading. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

I like the small details on the road like the trees roots and the dirt under the road. But like some one has already said, the shadow on the right and left folds are too dark. Lighten those and i think it would be better if the image had been a bit bigger. You could have also added some road signs or electrical lines.

For the people who dont know how to do this, maybe you could do a tutorial on it because i'm pretty sure we would all like to know how to do this!

Overall, i think it is an amazing concept. I think if there was a moral or lesson to the picture, it would have been a little better. Maybe like this: [link] or [link]

i think it looks great on this otherwhise plain fields.
the little details like the roots of the tree, the side of the cut and the scissor-sign on the road are just brilliant used.
the shadows are good placed and lok real.
i rated a bit less in impact because it has such a good technique that it looks as if it is normal if you just haste through the pages.

as the person named davidbrinnen already mentioned the shadows are a bit too dark but that is not too bad.

I played with this idea so long but I have neither the knowledge nor the ability to do something like this! The details like the roots of the lifted tree and the uneven edges at the sheets of lands are stunning and I love the gentle touch of featuring the scissor sign on the tarmac. I am amated, thank you for sharing this! Now it is in my "Sheer perfection" collection ;)
