I've often wondered about how the night sky looked to Van Gogh when he painted 'Starry Night.'

This is an homage to him, and to his painting, one of my all time favorites. We see him standing here, looking up at the night sky...probably in awe, as he wondered how he would capture the beauty he saw. As well, this was the view from the sanitarium he was staying at, as it's well known that the poor guy was quite mentally troubled. (For the record, it's believed he painted this from inside the sanitarium, but I didn't want bars on my image!)

I wanted this piece to be somewhat magical and fantastic, not just a normal night painting. Hence the large moon, large stars, transparent clouds etc., yet keeping a mostly realistic feel to it.

If you see the original painting, you see so much motion...it's as if he saw the vibration on all the objects, and that he captured the wind! See the original here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia…

Thanks for looking, and I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed creating it:) Done in Photoshop in about 7 hrs using matte painting techniques, and painting over.

Hi Alex,

I  have this piece of work as a poster in my room.

I have been working on a documentary for a few years. I've found the process quite difficult; had to be much more vulnerable than I had anticipated. At times the process has been overwhelming. I was reflecting on the creative process, this place where joy and pain meet in a wonderful array of colours, when I came across this poster at a poster sale. I saw in this work the very expression of that same creative process. When I struggle with the completion of my film, or am anxious of the outcome, I often turn to this image and think of Van Gogh and the incredible worked he accomplished in the midst of far worse torment.

Thank you for this piece. It has an honoured place in my home.

I'm so glad you find this piece comforting. Pain and creation go hand in hand as you're very well aware of, but it's all worth it in the end...best of luck with finishing your documentary!!

I've always been fascinated by Van Gogh, and I really love how you went into his perspective of viewing what he probably painted for Starry Night. It's really nice. Happy Happy..Onion Robin approved

Wow. The meaning behind this painting is....deep. It's funny how the most mentally disturbed people tend to be the most creative and artistic.

*jaw drops*

I've... never wondered that, but now that you've made art of it, I feel like a dunce for not having wondered about this. What absolute splendour!

I have loved this image since I first came across it. It is a wonderful piece of interpretive artwork. It manages to achieve some of both the emotional engagement and the dynamism of the Van Gogh treatment of the same subject, but by means of radically different technique. Bravo!

Just a heads up, your image is being sold as a poster in the Imaginus travelling poster sale thingy. They came to my University and I bought a copy of this. It was beautiful. I'm not sure if they got the rights to it or not but I thought you should know.

Starry Night is my favourite painting of all time. And you capture the essence
of what surely Van Gogh must have seen with such stark and pristine beauty.
I would love to have a large copy of this hanging in my home, if I could afford
it. As it stands, I've, for the time being, used it as my Facebook profile picture
(with full credits back to this page, of course.) This piece touches my very Soul,
man. Brilliantly done. +Fave, and hopefully you get at least a Daily Deviation for
it. And so much more. A brilliant homage. Thank you so much for sharing this.
