I have a credit card with Bank of America because Wells Fargo WAS a nightmare. I haven't had an issue yet but if people are telling you not to BofA then definitely also don't Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo targeted oppressed groups of people with predatory loans and mortgages (mostly poor black folk), and I was CONSTANTLY lied to. Customer Service was a joke and I was constantly being charged fees that I was not properly made aware of. In my checking it was overdrafts and minimum balance fees, but for my credit card I once went into a bank and asked if there was a charge and how much it was for a cash advance because I needed cash for change for a convention. I was told in person by a teller that Wells Fargo did not charge a fee, so I did the thing. After the convention, there's a $20 fee on the card. So I called and asked and told them what the teller told me, and they clarified that while Wells Fargo does not charge a fee on their end, the third party credit card company they do business through DOES. I got a partial refund, but it was so gross, I decided to cut dies altogether and once I had it payed off, I got out of Wells Fargo. Their credit cards, though they have Wells Fargo on them, are not actually run by Wells Fargo and so they used that loophole to tell me there was no fee. It was so ridiculous that they could claim ignorance of the fee when the card has their name on it.
If you're qualified, I have found banking services with USAA to be very pleasant. But you have to be grandfathered in or in a military family to get it, unless you are co-signing with a qualified USAA member. (for example, I am grandfathered in, but I was able to open a joint account with my roommate who was not qualified). I only chose not to get a credit card through them in order to not put "all my eggs in one basket" but if I ever had a serious issue with BoFA, I would probably just go USAA all the way.
As someone who's worked for bank of america as a customer service agent in their debit fraud department, they're awful and i wouldn't suggest them ever. One of my close friends is a customer service rep for their credit card services and it's just not worth it. Their interest rates are insane (the average is 15% - 30%) and they have a fraud protection system that locks the card up more times than it's worth. It does catch fraud from time to time, but i'm talking going out of state and trying to use it will lock your card for "fraud protection" and you'll have to call in to a call center to have us unlock your card. It can even be using your card at a gas pump when it does the test transaction to see if you can cover the cost of your gas purchase before allowing you to pump and it happens nearly daily.
The company also treats their workers with almost no regard and allowed us to be screamed at relentlessly and expected us to take it. They fuck up our pay and find loopholes to dock it, and have zero care for the safety of their customers. Their bank associates tend to be insane assholes to both the people in their call centers and customers if they don't have their way as well. Please never use them.
