I've just been made aware that DA has decided to (temporarily?) take away our choice of showcasing art in any width we desire.
</b>
That's right- if you upload a new deviation right now, you won't get a choice of "900 width" or "display original size".
Everything I upload, auto-resizes!

I decided to write a news article about this development of interest, since I don't see any official news or topics about this new implementation anywhere... only after 30 minutes found a topic about it on the forum.

What if today I want to upload a comic book artwork that is MEANT to be scrolled horizontally with very little height?
What if today I want to show a wallpaper that's 1800 pixels wide?
Statistically, only 10-20% of people click the "download" button- that means 80-90% of watchers will miss out on what I want to REALLY show.
Give me back my "display art in resolution that I originally uploaded it in" button.

From the forum post on the issue:
"We've recently changed our requirements for thumbnail resizing due to the changing market of computers, devices, and monitors. Essentially, more and more people are able to download higher-resolution imagery, and we want to encourage that trend. As such, we've removed the resizing tool for most cases where it previously existed in order to promote larger images and, as a result, more imagery to view and fall in love with.

You're still welcome to resize your images on your end, but in the near future our system will dynamically change the size of images depending upon the viewer's browser size and desktop resolution, meaning with your cooperation we'll be able to serve the right sized images for every individual's unique situation."

Ah, an interesting development!
So will my images in the future auto re-size and automatically fit width of the viewers monitors, just like wallpapers do on desktop nexus website?
What about right now, though? It seems that today we are in a situations where images don't resize to fit anything, they simply are forcefully shrunken, reducing display quality.

These in-progress features are fun and all, but they mostly terrify the pro artists on here from the thought of these advanced features interfering with quality of the art being displayed.
Look at the "TODAY" page, feel the terror-panic-drama wave forming each time a new feature is released without notice, or clear explanation.

...Further thoughts of interest related to new features...
How about giving a little more POWER to the artists themselves?
A little income would always encourage people.
YouTube allows you to get commission off of ads that are seen by your videos. Yes, those little commercials at the bottom of videos are annoying, but they actually help feed young film-makers.
Some youtube film-makers make decent income through that advertising. Why cant DA give us a little side income like that through an ability to advertise on our own pages by collaborating with DA adcast team in a lovely partnership of sorts?
Lets reverse this trend of iron curtain starving artists and make it a trend of capitalist free market love.

Sincerely,
A mildly concerned DA citizen.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for writing this. it's very irritating to me. when i scan a pic, i carefully reduce the size in an editing program to exactly what i want it to be and it's annoying that da resizes it. i want my art viewed at a certain size. because art that is at a smaller size than intended DOES NOT have the same impact as bigger art, i swear. and also, what if there is really small text or details? that requires a biiiig deviation!!
now, every time i submit a deviation that's wider than the screen size, i have to tell viewers "please download to view it in the size I INTENDED!!!" and a lot of people don't care to take the time to download =( =(

"we'll be able to serve the right sized images for every individual's unique situation.""

"every individual???" the only individual that matters is THE ARTIST THEMSELVES. THEY created the work and THEY should decide how others view it.

another thing that i wish you would have added: da should change the fact that every user can decide whether they want to see deviations zoomed in or at a smaller size, then click to zoom in. the ARTIST should decide whether they want viewers to see their work zoomed-in or not. i draw manga and i want every person to see the pages zoomed in automatically!!!

give more control to the artist, that's all i'm saying.

i am veeeeeery angry about all this.

I'm pretty pissed . . .
"HERE, WORK IN THESE PERAMETERS". What I feel is an
"irony" is DA goes on about "Artists Freedom of
expression" . . .
IF YOU CAN FIT IT IN THESE PERAMETERS !
I really love DA, how easy it is to submit/up-load your
work, the look, just about everything, and then the
powers that be have to throw a wrench into the
machine.
I can't have many of my pieces "Downloadable"
because some of my pieces are still in process of
Production and it already runs the risk of plagerism
by "stealing an idea", at the same time "promoting"
the images to get looks... Catch 22.
That begs the question, if you guys are allowing to
download your Art, yet you are selling Prints, isn't
that like shooting yourselves in the foot?
But I guess a HUGE "watermark" solves that
problem (yes?).

I would hope DA goes back to, "If it works, don't fix it".
It was a nice feature to have the size the Artist wants
it at. Everyone can see your details, everyone wins!

(These comments and opinions are soley your rights
that they are expressed in a constructive manner...
DAMN IT!)
And now back to your regularly scheduled frustrations
and hoops to jump through (sigh, the life of every
Artist).
:gallery:

By the way, WHY do I see comments that they got
rid of the downsizing... uh, did they do it for a DAY?
What gives?

yeah thats a good idea to have DA do something on the resizing for us. I would like to know does it depend on the pixels of the image or the dimensions of it?

Yeah, I fiddled with the settings after being denied upload for size issues in a couple different sections and that's the only one that would allow it. :/ So if your watchers don't have scraps toggled on, no one sees it unless you link it in public view or someone goes to look.

The more restrictions that are put on artists
the less artists can express themselves.
Please keep this in mind DA.
