For my final project in World Literature, I did a visual depiction of each of the Circles and subsections of Dante's Hell, and placed literary characters in each of the circles, save Bolgia 3 of the Eighth Circle. Simony isn't very common in the books I've read. (Oh dang, some very smart readers pointed out that Richelieu- from Dumas' The Three Musketeers- should've been put in there. How on earth did I think of de Winter and not remember Richelieu? A thousand pardons, readers. Just don't pay for them.)

All of the characters here have done a lot of different things, so it's very possible you might disagree with a placement. But don't take it too seriously. It's all for fun and grades. :XD:

I love this idea! Especially the choice of literary characters, that was great.

Would a version of Paradiso be possible? Just curious.
Chaosfive-55's avatar
I must object to your placing Montresor in the Inferno, and not Fortunato; Montresor was simply redressing the thousand injuries (and a grievous insult) which Fortunato had inflicted upon him.
Chaosfive-55's avatar
As for your own soul, it is destined for Paradise, rather than the Pit!

Why didn't you add in the villains from the Twilight saga, The Mortal Instruments, and His Dark Materials?
AlexisRoyce's avatar
There's a lot of characters in there already. Can't do everyone.
WCLyon's avatar
I don't blame you.

Part of why Hell is such a stupid concept . . .
LogiTeeka's avatar
Well, in the original text of the scriptures, Hell is actually much more terrifying in concept.

It makes Dante's rendition look like Heaven in comparison.
GuesssWho9's avatar
Pretty sure there is no Hell in the Bible, actually. The unworthy just never wake up.
LogiTeeka's avatar
Well, if you're going by the Old Testament, everyone is sent to the same place. Whether you were good or bad in life, you all get to Sheol, which is basically just a state of limbo for all deceased souls. An eternal resting ground.

It wasn't until the New Testament when the concept of Hell (or Gehenna as it was called) was introduced. And as torturous and miserable as it's made out to be in Dante's tale, the actual description is much more terrifying. Since God is basically the essence of everything that exists as far as we know, a realm where his presence doesn't subsist is basically nothing, leaving all wayward souls to wander eternally in an infinite void of complete oblivion with no hope of escape.

That alone is pure nightmare fuel. I'd rather be tortured in Dante's hell rather than experience the perpetual torment of nonexistence; at least the former has some substance or essence.
GuesssWho9's avatar
But if it doesn't exist, how is it torment? Scary to think about, yes, but not anything at all to actually go through.
LogiTeeka's avatar
I think it's a primal fear which all lifeforms hold within themselves. The things which we all crave for in this world is the sense of love, companionship, and existence, for it's what makes nearly all of us happy and willing to live through the bleakest of situations. Strip that all away and the soul it faces nothing but complete and utter hopelessness. It's like experiencing eternal depression while living in a complete vegetative state.

Whether it's real or not is beside the point.
GuesssWho9's avatar
But depression and a vegetative state are, you know, mutually exclusive
LogiTeeka's avatar
I meant it figuratively. I mean, something akin to a vegetative state is depressing by its very definition.
AlexisRoyce's avatar
This is kind of off topic, but I like your Nny avatar. You never see JTHM around anymore!

This is absolutely amazing! I can't begin to imagine the amount of work, time, and effort you put into this. My personal favorites are the White Witch, The Creation, Grima, Hannibal Lecter, Miss Havisham, Dracula, Delores Umbridge, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Bob Ewell, Sikes, Duke and Dauphin, and pretty much everyone else I recognized! Adding yourself was a nice touch too.

What would be absolutely amazing is if someone did this with every fictional medium out there. I can already come up with several villains from cartoons: Ozai, Azulon, Zhao, Jet, Sozin, Noatak, and Tarrlock from the Avatar series; Aku from Samurai Jack; and Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls.

Hmm, I wonder where the Joker would go?

Again, great work!
AlexisRoyce's avatar
Thank you very much!
LogiTeeka's avatar
This is a pretty impressive project. You've certainly put a lot of thought and work into it.

I can't imagine how much more difficult it would've been had you included villains from other forms of media like movies and comic books, but literature is a good place to start at.
AlexisRoyce's avatar
Thank you! And it would be cool to do different mediums. Maybe someday I might be up to the challenge!
If it were possible, I'd actually like to interview Dante and get his opinion on where various historical figures would go in his system--Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
