DON'T Go To Art SchoolHey all!
There has been so much misinformation on the topic of Art School I felt it was seriously needed I tackled the topic from the perspective of a professional. It's a long read, so get comfy
First things first, I'm Marc (hello!) and if you didn't know already, up until a little over a year ago I was a Senior Artist (2D/3D) working for Blizzard Entertainment. I worked on Overwatch for 5 years as a member of the starting team (2nd character artist on the team) and then on StarCraft and Heroes of the Storm.
I've given talks, interviews, written workshops for ImagineFX and a number of other magazines, worked freelance on the side throughout my career and more importantly, I've never been to art school. I'm now leading the team over @ Cubebrush but that's boring so let's skip over that
With this post I want to accomplish 3 different things:
🔹 Debunk the importance of traditional art schools
🔹 Debunk the belief you need a degree

NEW ART School - Digital Artists join now!
Hey all! I'm super excited to finally announce my latest mega project - "Digital ART School" 🎉
I've been gathering various art school curriculums over the last year with the hopes of putting together a massive program teaching you the same content you would find in a traditional art school, but specially made with digital arts in mind and at a fraction of the cost charged by institutions. I'm finally ready to launch it
I've never been a fan of traditional art schools since aside from being big ripoffs, there's always a significant portion of the classes that are pretty much useless or simply missing. Hopefully this addresses all their shortcomings and provides even more than you would normally get.
Please give this post a share if someone in your family or on your friends list could use it! 💖
So here we go, as per usual getting in early will save you a ton on the total price, about 5
Character Redesign Commissions [CLOSED]EDIT: Thanks for everyone who was interested in this! You're all so nice :3
If you want these, they've become an official commission. Although I warn you the prices have been raised a lot.
NOTE: The price can go UP if the character is very complex and if you want to keep it that way! (If you want me to simplify it, that's a different story!)
The price can also be negotiated if your character is very simple, but don't get your hopes up as it would not go that low!
Note, these are REDESIGNS not customs! These will be designed based on an OC you give to me! These are not "here's a description of my oc" I do need a visual reference of your character that YOU own. (this also means that I won't do redesigns of characters you don't own unless you're getting one for a friend, in which you need their permission first!)You don't HAVE to use my redesign, you're aloud to make changes to it to your liking. However once the redesign is done, I can't refund you

A Beginner's Guide to Offering Commissions Online*Edit 06/29/2017* Hi guys! It's been over 3 years since I originally wrote this guide. I was just rereading today, and while I still agree with many of the core principals, there are some edits and updates I would like to make. I am going to try and make an updated version sometime soon!
I decided to write this journal because in the last month alone, I had about five young artists ask me this question in one form or another: "How should I go about offering commissions?"
This seemingly easy question can actually be quite difficult to answer. The first time I was asked this question, I expected to write only a paragraph response. I was shocked to find that once I had finished writing my response, I had been writing for almost a half hour and had written five paragraphs. Why is this not a simple question? I think the answer lies in the fact that how to offer commissions is not altogether intuitive. I know that when I began to offer commissions,

DO YOU CALL YOURSELF AN ARTIST?When I was in art college, the instructor said the word "artist" was a "gift" word - that you couldn't give it to yourself. Someone else had to call you an artist for it to be so. But Vincent Van Gogh's couldn't make a single sale until his 700th painting (true). Does that mean Van Gogh wasn't an artist after he finished his 699th one? But he was after he sold his 700th one? Hmmm. What do you think?
DO YOU REALIZE HOW TALENTED YOU ARE?One of the biggest drawback of aspiring artists may surprise you: They don't know how good they are. Learning to draw is like running a race, but not being able to see the finish line ahead of you. You imagine that it's so far away, when you might be closer than you think.
I've looked at many artists' work on DA. Some people ask me to check out their gallery. At other times, I come across it by chance. And I've also had the privilege to have worked with some of the most talented artists on DA. From the perspective of someone who has had many books published, as well as art kits and drawing pads, I can tell you that if you're on DA, chances are that you're too self-critical. I see it all the time in comments.
Everyone needs work on the areas which could use improvement. But I truly believe that if all you're doing it trying to work on your faults, you won't excel as much as if you also focus on your strengths. And you'll enjoy it more. And drawing is one of the few jobs where enjoyment
