This is my own design for a Pulse SMG weapon.
I used 3Ds Max to model the gun and rendered in vRay.
Then ALOT of post work was done in Photoshop. I will I could render well enough to produce this effect.

Interesting. It would appear to be pump action which is a interesting concept for plasma based and i agree with Great-5 on the barrel stub giving a Bullet gun but it is still epic and cool looking

Yeah, This model is far from technically correct! I just wanted to design something that looked badass. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!

I tried making something like it last night and it looks nice but i cant get the lighting to work. only the lights on the gun show up and thats not nearly enough

Nice! I could definitely see this as a laser or plasma-type weapon.

I see it as a plasma based weapon.

I can see that...it seems plasma weapons (minus the ones from Halo, which are alien in origin, I'm talking about HUMAN plasma weapons) often have thick, heavy, square barrels, sometimes with lots of cooling vents on them. The only thing about this design that makes it seem less plasma-like to me is the protruding barrel stub at the end, which kinda makes it look more like a bullet weapon in my opinion.

Nice, but the grip needs some more contours.

It's nice but that grip is just. Not ergonomically friendly.

you *can* render all of this directly in 3DSMax, save the localized atmospheric effects. Those would be a pain, and might not be possible

Yeah, I was sure it was possible. But, I have only just started looking into rendering. So maybe one day I can render like this straight out out 3D max

I don't know what version you are using, but I find that a good place to start is the classic three light setup (sun simulator, ambient, and groundshine)
